Did you know that the world’s largest sleep study is a Canadian initiative and there’s still time for you to take part?
That’s right, Western University in Ontario is currently accepting volunteers to take part in a massive sleep experiment. Western is working in partnership with Cambridge Brain Sciences, and the neurologists behind the study believe that sleep deprivation is becoming a more widespread problem. We all know that a lack of sleep is unhealthy. But the study is looking to collect data on a massive scale and is seeking to produce results that will accurately quantify what a healthy night’s sleep looks like.
Sleep studies are important
It’s hard to overstate the value of a good night’s sleep – nothing beats feeling rested and mentally serene! So, why do so many of us pursue sleep-deprived lives that hurt our brain health? And while the research project is based in Canada, this isn’t just a Canadian problem. The neurologists behind the study consider sleep deprivation to be a global challenge. And they are keen to find out what the long-term implications of this issue will be for society and individuals. There are so many questions unanswered in the field of sleep science, yet we all have experience and opinions on what healthy sleep behaviors look like.
For example, many of us would say that younger people can get by with less sleep quite happily. In fact, a question the sleep study hopes to answer is if sleep deprivation is less harmful to youths. Or, to put it another way, does sleep affect cognition as we age? Likewise, the sleep study will move research forward on the long-term health effects of sleep deprivation, and which types of brain cognition are most affected by sleep loss.
By thoroughly researching questions like these, it’s hoped that the widespread problem of sleep deprivation can be better understood. Making progress in this area of the investigation could mean broad implications for how many of us live, work and approach our health.
The sleep study is fun
If you are a night owl, wouldn’t you like to know if your brain cognition is more or less efficient than that of a morning person? You’ll have to wait for the neurologists at Western University to publish their findings for a full set of answers to such questions. However, taking part in the survey will guarantee you a timely report showing how your brain health and sleep patterns compare to thousands of other people.
If you are interested in taking part in the world’s largest sleep study, the commitment is three days (with 30 to 40 minutes of participation per day). Best of all, the study involves some enjoyable brain games. If you’ve done brain training before, you’ll love these games. They’re very similar to a lot of the exercises available online on brain training software. If you haven’t played games like this before, they can be a little frustrating at first. But after five minutes or so, they become a lot of fun!
