Is “Sleeping on a Cloud” Worth $2,000+ in Today’s Competitive Mattress Market?
Following the success of their initial product, the Puffy Mattress (read our review here), the U.S.-based Puffy expanded into the luxury segment with two new mattress lines: the Puffy Royal (USA only) and the Puffy Lux.
Though Puffy is an American company that does most of its business in the United States, its two top-selling brands are available in Canada. By manufacturing their Canadian orders within Canada, Puffy can avoid the steep tariffs that other American mattress brands face when trying to sell their US-produced products in Canada. The Puffy Lux is also available as a hybrid mattress, though that model is not currently available in Canada.
What’s the difference between the Puffy Lux and the original Puffy mattress? The main difference is that the Puffy Lux has an extra foam layer, which softens the overall feel of the mattress and raises the height by two inches. That added softness will certainly appeal to shoppers searching for “cloud-like comfort,” the company’s main differentiator in a crowded online marketplace. But is the extra $900 worth the upgrade for a mattress that shares most of its components with the original Puffy?
While its steep price tag of $2,449 (for a queen) and lacklustre mattress composition don’t favour Puffy Lux, it also faces tough competition in the Canadian mattress market.
Canadian sleepers can find premium memory foam mattresses like Octave that are engineered using leading-edge cooling features like a CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibre cover, heat-dissipating copper-infused memory foam, and phase-change material to offer an unmatched experience of coolness and comfort—and at an incredible starting price of just $599.

*IMPORTANT NOTE TO READERS*
While researching this article, we discovered a couple of potentially misleading advertising practices that may unduly influence your purchase decision. Please take these into consideration when evaluating information online.
At the time of publication (Jan. 2022), Puffy.ca was advertising a “New Year’s Sale” of $300 off the purchase price of any Puffy mattress. According to our price tracking log, a similar sale has been running every day dating back to December 2019, and the mattress has never been listed for more than its current advertised price. The listed $300 “discount” and the seemingly time-sensitive nature of the sale might create a false sense of urgency for customers who worry about missing out on a deal. When listing sale and reference prices, retail businesses operating within Canada are subject to the advertising practices listed in subsections 74.01(2) and 74.01(3) of the Competition Act.
Furthermore, a handful of affiliate websites that review the Puffy Lux mattress and earn commissions upon sales have been misleadingly attributing a customer review as an endorsement by Consumer Reports. (These affiliates are neither owned nor operated by Puffy, but have a financial incentive to sell the Puffy Lux.) For example, the website bestmattressonline.org, which advertises through prominent paid ads in Google, lists the Puffy Lux as their top-rated mattress in Canada of 2022. Immediately beneath the photo of the Puffy Lux is a testimonial saying “Recommend Puffy for just about anyone.” The quote is attributed to Consumer Reports, a well-respected nonprofit consumer organization that tests and reviews products. Upon verifying the source of this claim, the quote is not an endorsement from the nonprofit consumer organization; rather, it is an excerpt from a review left by a customer on the website, and in reference to a different Puffy product. This same testimonial wrongly attributed to Consumer Reports is also listed on other affiliate websites.

First Impressions: Straight Out of the Box
The Arrival
The Puffy Lux is sold exclusively online in Canada.
Shipping is free for all Canadian addresses. The mattress usually ships within 2–5 business days, with delivery completing between 3–10 business days.
The Unboxing
Like other bed-in-a-box mattresses, the Puffy Lux is easy to unpack and set up from its vacuum-seal packaging. Once unboxed, the mattress expands to its full 12 inches in height within about 5 minutes. As with all other compressed foam mattresses, expect the Puffy Lux to firm up a bit over the first 48 hours after unboxing.
The Look
Like other Puffy mattresses, the Puffy Lux is immediately recognizable by the cloud pattern on its top surface. The ends of the bed are capped with diamond-stitched grey upholstery, with the Puffy logo showcased at the foot of the bed. Finally, the bottom panel uses a grippy fabric that makes it easier to keep your mattress in place on the bed frame.
The Feel
As you would expect from a mattress decorated with little clouds, the Puffy Lux mattress has a soft and inviting feel as you lie down on it. (For more details, see the next section for testing conducted by third-party engineers.)
Puffy describes their Lux mattress as “medium-plush.” Our testers agree with their assessment, describing it as either a medium or medium-soft mattress. Sleepers who weigh less than 150 lbs or those who are seeking a soft foam surface to relieve pressure points should feel comfortable on the Puffy Lux.
Official Test Results: How Do Engineers Rate Puffy Lux?
The following results were determined by licensed 3rd-party engineers, commissioned by us:
To be able to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website, it was necessary to hire licensed 3rd-party engineers. Their independence and operating standards help to ensure the results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report is linked below and has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
*Be advised: Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.*
How Our Engineers Test Each Mattress:
Test Scores | Puffy Lux |
---|---|
Firmness: | 4.7 / 10 |
Edge support: | 4.4 / 10 |
Motion isolation: | 7.3 / 10 |
Bounce: | 2.7 / 10 |
Feel & Firmness
Puffy advertises their Lux mattress as having a “medium-plush feel,” somewhere in the firmness spectrum between ‘medium’ and ‘medium-soft.’ This claim is supported by our test results. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Puffy Lux is rated at 4.7 / 10 on the firmness spectrum.
With its moderate amount of sinkage, the Puffy Lux should appeal most to side sleepers, certain lightweight individuals (under 150 lbs), and sleepers who prefer softer mattresses. Individuals with chronic lower back pain aggravated by softer sleep surfaces may wish to consider a firm mattress instead. Though the company claims its mattress construction features targeted spinal alignment, we found no specifics in person or on the Puffy website to support this claim.
Keep in mind, most other online mattresses are slightly more firm than Puffy Lux so that they are better able to accommodate the comfort preferences of individuals who weigh more than 150 lbs. These are often described as ‘medium-firm’ mattresses.
Edge Support
Are you someone with mobility issues who sometimes has difficulties rising out of bed? Or do you often sit on the edges of the bed to get dressed? If so, you’ll probably appreciate a mattress with strong edge support.
According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Puffy Lux earned an edge support rating of 4.4 / 10. This is a typical score for thicker memory foam mattresses like Puffy Lux, an inevitable tradeoff to get the body contouring, pressure-point relief, and motion isolation of memory foam. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses, on the other hand, tend to earn higher ratings for edge support and bounce.
Of note: The Puffy Lux does not have reinforced edge walls or other common mechanisms used to firm up the edges of foam mattresses.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good and one of the main reasons couples make the switch from innerspring to all-foam. In this regard, the Puffy Lux delivers exactly what you would expect. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Puffy Lux scored 7.3 / 10 on the motion isolation scale.
This score is above average for all-foam mattresses tested on this site. Owners can expect very little motion transfer to interrupt their sleep on the Puffy Lux, which is an especially valuable consideration for couples. This is also a desirable feature for guest room mattresses; however, at $2,449 CAD for a queen, this mattress might be too expensive for that type of supporting role. A better option within budget is Douglas, our Top-Rated Foam Mattress and 2021 Product of the Year™ winner (Starting Price: $599 CAD; Motion Isolation Rating: 8.3).
Bounce
Because memory foam mattresses like the Puffy Lux tend to provide good motion isolation, that usually translates to a lower bounce rating compared to innerspring and hybrid mattresses. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Puffy Lux’s bounce rating is 2.7 / 10.
Again, this low rating isn’t necessarily a drawback. Instead, it’s a natural consequence of a design that promotes cushioning and shock absorption, which many mattress shoppers prefer over a bouncier surface that pushes back against the body. If your idea of comfort includes slowly sinking into a plush mattress that hugs your body, then Puffy Lux might be a good choice for you.

Puffy Lux Mattress Layers
Puffy Lux contains four layers of foam that work together to provide a good balance of comfort and support. Although the Puffy website counts the cover as two additional layers, only layers consisting of foam or coils are included in our mattress rating algorithm.
- First layer: 2 inches of Cooling Cloud™ Foam. The uppermost layer of the Puffy Lux is two inches of cooling gel memory foam. This gel-infused foam assists with temperature regulation to help keep sleepers from overheating. The memory foam also creates some body contouring and pressure-point relief at the mattress’ surface. Layer density: Unspecified.
- Second layer: 2 inches of Plush Dual Cloud Foam. This second layer is what distinguishes the Puffy Lux from the company’s entry-level model. As its name suggests, this Plush Dual Cloud Foam softens the overall feel of the mattress. Layer density: Unspecified.
- Third layer: 2 inches of Climate Comfort™ Foam. This layer acts as a transition between the comfort layers above and the supportive base below. Not only is this layer advertised as climate-adaptive, but it helps to eliminate motion transfer. Layer density: Unspecified.
- Fourth layer: 6 inches of high-density base foam. This support layer helps give the mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far. Layer density: Unspecified.
Of note: Foam density information for Puffy Lux is not publicly available.
Puffy Lux Mattress Cover
The Puffy Lux has a two-tone cover that can be unzipped to remove. The “stain-resistant cloud cover” features dozens of little cloud emblems to advertise the plush materials beneath. Meanwhile, the bottom surface has a grippy texture that helps the mattress stay in place on any approved surface.
One thing to note is that the removable cover is NOT machine washable. The care label recommends to spot-clean the fabric with a damp cloth. The lack of this convenient care feature is quite surprising for an all-foam mattress in this higher price segment. The company also does not specify how its stain-resistant fabric works. Shoppers who wish to be able to easily clean and care for their mattress may wish to purchase a waterproof mattress protector, which Puffy offers at prices starting at $119.

Final Thoughts on Puffy Lux
With a relatively low overall rating of 5.3, the Puffy Lux suffers from one major attribute: its price.
The Puffy Lux is the middle-tier product in the Puffy catalog, selling for $900 CAD more than the Puffy mattress despite only having one additional layer. The top-of-the-line Puffy mattress is the Puffy Royal, with zoned support and other luxury offerings. This leaves the Puffy Lux squeezed in the middle: not the best value of the bunch, and lacking some of the top features.
In contrast, with the same amount of money it would cost to buy a queen-size Puffy Lux, you could purchase both the Canadian-made Douglas mattress and the Douglas Adjustable Bed and still have nearly $450 left to use as you please.
Though the soft memory foam construction of the Puffy Lux may appeal to many sleepers, its lack of a number of universal features for mattresses in this category causes another reason to think twice before purchasing the Lux. It does not have cooling copper-gel memory foam or multi-zoned support layers. In contrast, the Octave is a Canadian-made memory foam mattress that offers both of those options, including a full year (365-night) sleep trial.
For these reasons, we recommend that readers who are interested in the Puffy Lux first look at some of the other mattress options included our updated list of this year’s Best Foam Mattresses.
