GhostBed Luxe Foam

Meet the Mattress

The GhostBed Luxe is a memory foam mattress from GhostBed Canada with a medium feel. It features multiple cooling technologies, including Ghost Ice fabric, cooling gel foam, and graphite-infused foam. At $2,299 for a queen size, it’s more expensive than competing all-foam mattress options like Douglas Original and Octave Vista.

GhostBed Luxe and Octave Horizon are two Canadian-made memory foam mattresses designed with cooling features in mind. When compared side by side, both mattresses offer longer-than-average warranties. They also performed well in areas such as edge support and motion isolation, according to third-party engineering tests we commissioned.

That said, there are a few key differences between the two mattresses. For example, Octave Horizon includes more cooling features, which earned it the highest cooling feature score of any mattress we’ve tested to date. It also has a medium-firm feel that works well for most sleepers because of its balanced levels of comfort and support. On the other hand, the GhostBed Luxe has a softer feel, which may not be a good fit for sleepers who need a little extra support.

Octave also offers a longer 365-night sleep trial, compared to GhostBed’s 101-night trial. This lets you test the mattress in the comfort of your own home for a full year before deciding if it’s the right fit for you. But the biggest difference between these two mattresses is the cost: GhostBed Luxe retails at $2,299 for a queen, while the Octave Horizon is just $1,499 for the same size.

Not sure which mattress is the better fit for you? We’ve put together all the key details to help you make a decision.

Product Details: Octave Horizon

Corner view of the Octave Horizon mattress sitting on a bedframe in a bedroom

Octave Horizon is the most advanced mattress model in the Octave lineup, standing 14" tall with 5 layers. It has a medium-firm feel according to third-party engineer tests that we commissioned, which is a versatile firmness level that works for different sleep styles and positions.

If you tend to get hot while you sleep, you'll appreciate the cooling elements this mattress offers. It features a cool-to-the-touch cover made with CryoFusion™ nanofibers, CopperGel™ memory foam with PolarMAX® phase-change material, aerated latex foam, and a base layer with air channels for improved airflow.

Plus, for anyone who needs extra support for their shoulders, hips, or back, the Horizon has a five-zoned support system that helps relieve pressure points.

A queen sells for $1,499, and comes with a 365-night sleep trial, a 15-year warranty, and a free bedding bundle that includes a cotton sheet set, duvet cover, down alternative duvet, pillow(s), pillow protector(s), and a mattress protector. Plus, if you decide to return it, they'll pick it up for free and give you a full refund.

Product Details: Ghostbed Luxe

Corner view of the ghostbed luxe mattress on a bedframe in a bedroom

GhostBed Luxe is a 6-layer, 14" memory foam mattress built with cooling in mind. It features GhostBed's proprietary Ghost Ice fabric material in the cover, along with gel-infused memory foam, graphite-infused foam, and phase-change material that draws heat away from the body.

GhostBed markets this mattress as medium-firm, but in third-party engineer testing that we commissioned, it scored 5.1/10 for firmness, which puts it in our medium category. Medium mattresses should work for some back and side sleepers. But stomach or heavier-weight sleepers might prefer a mattress with a bit more support to promote proper spinal alignment.

At $2,299 for a queen, GhostBed Luxe is one of the more expensive all-foam mattresses available in Canada. It comes with a 101-night sleep trial and a 25-year warranty. Returns are free after a 30-night break-in period, but GhostBed charges a 15% restocking fee. If you bought the mattress at a discount, you may also be asked to repay that amount before a refund is issued.

Mattress Construction

Both GhostBed Luxe and Octave Horizon are 14" memory foam mattresses that use multi-layer foam constructions to offer a balance of comfort, support, and breathability.

Octave Horizon

Side angle photo showing the internal layers of the Octave Horizon mattress

  • 1st Layer: 2.5" of CopperGel™ memory foam infused with PolarMAX® phase-change material. Copper helps keep the surface fresh, while phase-change materials adjust to your body temperature through the night, allowing for a comfortable night's sleep.
  • 2nd Layer: 1.5" of aerated latex with hundreds of air vents. These vents help with airflow, making the mattress more breathable and helping to control temperature for a better sleep experience.
  • 3rd Layer: 2" of ecoLuxe® cooling gel foam to absorb heat from the upper layers while adding contouring around the body for pressure-point relief, soothing muscles and reducing tension.
  • 4th Layer: 2" of Elastex® foam that cushions the body and adds a bit of extra bounce for responsiveness, without losing motion isolation.
  • 5th Layer: 6" of high-density, zoned support foam provides ergonomic support for your back, hips, and knees, promoting proper spinal alignment and pressure point relief. This foam also includes air channels for extra cooling airflow.

Octave Horizon has a white top cover with blue pinstripes and a deep navy side panel. It's made with CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres that help pull moisture and heat away from the body. The cover is removable and machine-washable for easy cleaning.

GhostBed Luxe

Side view of the ghostbed luxe grande plus mattress's internal layers

  • 1st Layer: 1.5" of cooling fibre and gel-infused foam that is quilted under the top cover.
  • 2nd Layer: 0.5" of Ghost Ice foam, which is a proprietary foam layer which is said to move heat away from the body.
  • 3rd Layer: 1.5″ of graphite-infused cooling gel memory foam. This layer contours to your body while the graphite and cooling gel helps pull heat away.
  • 4th Layer: 1.5″ of Ghost Bounce foam, which stops you from sinking straight into the firm base layer. It's also designed to add a bit of bounce, though GhostBed doesn't say exactly how.
  • 5th Layer: 2" of "ProCore Elite" foam with zoned support in the middle third area of the mattress.
  • 6th Layer: 7" of high-density support foam that adds firmness and structure to the mattress, helping to prevent deep sinkage.

GhostBed Luxe features a grey quilted cover made from Ghost Ice fabric, designed to feel cool to the touch. The darker grey sidewalls are directly connected to the Euro-top cover. The cover isn't removable or machine-washable, so spills or stains need to be spot-cleaned.

In third-party engineering testing we commissioned, both GhostBed Luxe and Octave Horizon performed well in edge support and motion isolation. A mattress with good edge support lets you sit or lie near the edge without feeling like you'll slide off, while good motion isolation means you're less likely to feel your partner's movements during the night.

Where Octave Differs:

  • Octave Horizon scored 6.0/10 for firmness, placing it in the medium-firm category. This level of firmness works well for a wide range of sleep styles, including back, side, and stomach sleepers.
  • With a cooling features score of 9.0/10 (the highest we've recorded across 120+ mattresses we've reviewed), Octave Horizon stands out for its temperature regulation. It earned this score for its CopperGel™ memory foam, PolarMAX® phase-change material, aerated latex, open-cell foam, air channelled base, and CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibre cover.

Where GhostBed Differs:

  • GhostBed Luxe scored 5.1/10 for firmness, giving it a medium feel. This softer profile may appeal to side sleepers or those who prefer more contouring. However, back and stomach sleepers, as well as those who may need a little more support, may prefer a mattress that's a little firmer.
  • GhostBed Luxe has a lower cooling feature score of 5.7/10. This mattress earned points for features like a cooling cover, gel memory foam, phase-change material and graphite-infused foam.

Octave

Octave ships across Canada, with most orders arriving within 3–10 business days. The mattress arrives compressed in a box, and you can typically sleep on it the same night. Octave Horizon comes with a 365-night sleep trial. If you decide the mattress isn't the right fit after 21 nights, you can return it for free (with no hidden restocking fees), and get a full refund. The mattress is backed by a 15-year warranty and includes a free bedding bundle with every purchase.

GhostBed

GhostBed ships across Canada with FedEx, and most orders arrive within 2–5 business days business days. The mattress shows up compressed in a box, and the company recommends waiting 24-48 hours for it to fully expand after unboxing.

The GhostBed Luxe comes with a 101-night sleep trial. That said, this trial starts earlier than most other brands: it starts when your mattress ships, instead of when it arrives. You can return the mattress anytime after 30 nights of your trial.

In the case of a return, GhostBed will deduct a 15% fee from your refund. If you bought the mattress at a discounted price, you may also need to repay that amount. But you keep the mattress, it'll be backed by a 25-year warranty, which is longer than the industry average.

Final Recommendation

Both GhostBed Luxe and Octave Horizon are memory foam mattresses with cooling technology and very good motion isolation. But there are some meaningful differences between them.

GhostBed Luxe has a longer 25-year warranty and slightly higher scores for motion isolation and edge support. But a queen costs more at $2,299, it offers a shorter 101-night sleep trial, and returns are subject to a 15% restocking fee.

When it comes to cooling foam mattresses in Canada, Octave Horizon delivers more for less. At $1,499 for a queen, it costs less than GhostBed Luxe and earned a much higher cooling feature score of 9.0/10. Add in a 365-night sleep trial, free returns, and a free bedding bundle, and it's our clear pick in this comparison.
