Douglas: A Feature-Rich Mattress at a Great Price
Bed-in-a-box mattresses, specifically all-foam and combination foam mattresses, have become widely popular in Canada. Polysleep and Douglas are among the more well-known Canadian bed-in-a-box brands, but a few factors immediately set them apart.
The Polysleep mattress has just over 1,500 customer reviews, a whopping 10x less than the Douglas mattress at 15,000. On top of this, Polysleep charges a $85 return fee. This means if you’re not in love with your Polysleep, you’re not getting a full refund if you return it. Douglas not only offers one of the longest sleep trials in Canada, but they also do not charge any return fees. Despite its more expensive price tag, the Polysleep doesn’t offer nearly as many features as the Douglas.
At $799 for a Queen, the Douglas mattress comes out to $400 in savings among other attractive features:
- A significantly longer sleep trial of 365 nights
- A longer warranty of 20 years
- A machine-washable mattress cover with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres
- A medium-firm mattress with consistent comfort and support
- Cooling gel foam
- 15,000+ customer reviews
- Comes with a free bedding bundle
The very competitive price point, truly risk-free return policy, and overall value have made it very clear Douglas is the winner. It’s also why Douglas is Mattress-Reviews.com’s TOP PICK for MATTRESS UNDER $1,000 CAD. To see how we compared these two mattresses and read our full in-depth review, keep scrolling.

Polysleep is a Montreal-based bed-in-a-box company that entered the Canadian sleep space in 2016. Sticking true to their roots, Polysleep sells three variations of their hybrid memory foam mattress and Polysleep mattresses are made in Montreal.
Douglas was introduced in 2017 by Canadian bed-in-a-box company GoodMorning.com. Douglas was manufactured as a single-firmness mattress, designed using eight years' worth of engineering data and customer feedback. GoodMorning.com designed the Douglas to be a value-packed, Canadian-made mattress at an unheard-of low price. They offer the same level of customer service for the Douglas as they do across their growing catalogue, along with a 365-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

Shipping times for Polysleep and Douglas vary, but only by a day. Both mattresses will be delivered within 10 business days.
As with any bed-in-a-box brand, Polysleep and Douglas heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. Douglas has the longest sleep trial of both mattress brands with a 365-night sleep trial. Polysleep only offers a 100-night sleep trial.
If a customer wishes to return their Polysleep mattress or Douglas mattress within the sleep trial, both companies will arrange to pick the mattresses up. However, customers should be aware that Polysleep only issues partial refunds. Every Polysleep mattress return warrants a mandatory $85 flat fee deducted from the original refund amount. On the other hand, Douglas issues full refunds upon mattress pick-up and has no additional return fees.

The Polysleep and Douglas mattresses were delivered to us within the expected time frames. Both mattresses were wrapped in heavy-duty plastic layers in their boxes for protection during shipping.
While the Polysleep mattress box was sealed with adhesive glue, customers might need scissors or a knife to open the box. Contrarily, the Douglas mattress box was sealed with heavy-duty tape. Customers will need scissors or a knife to open the box. To prevent potential harm to yourself or your new mattress, remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects.
Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.
The Polysleep mattress was protected with three thick layers of heavy-duty plastic – one to compress it in a vacuum seal, and two to keep it tightly rolled in a cylinder shape. On the other hand, the Douglas mattress was protected with two thick layers of heavy-duty plastic. Customers will need to unwrap the outer layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, form.
Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled Polysleep mattress or Douglas mattress onto the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer of plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the frame. Once in position, remove that outer plastic layer. After completing this process, the mattress will rest unrolled before you.
Next, cut and remove the remaining layers of plastic. With the vacuum seal now broken, the new mattress will begin to decompress. A bed-in-a-box mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes to a few days. The Douglas mattress took 2 minutes to expand, while the Polysleep mattress expanded within 3 minutes.

Also, both mattresses have a unique top cover which showcases each brand’s personality. Top covers are sometimes washable, and out of the two mattresses tested, only the Douglas has a machine-washable top cover.
Polysleep vs Douglas Mattress Layers

Douglas
Polysleep Mattress Layers
The Polysleep mattress contains three layers of foam:
- The first layer is 3” ventilated hybrid foam. This layer is designed to provide optimal comfort and temperature performance. Foam density: 3.0 lbs/ft3.
- The second layer of the Polysleep mattress is 1.5” soft support foam. This transition layer works with the comfort layer to provide an additional level of support and will help conform to your body shape. Foam density: 1.8 lbs/ft3.
- The third layer is 5.5″ base foam. This bottom support layer gives the mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far. Foam density: between 1.5 lbs/ft3 and 2 lbs/ft3.
Douglas Mattress Layers
Douglas uses three layers of foam in the construction of its Canadian-made mattress.- First layer: 2 inches of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. This cooling gel encourages a restful sleep by ensuring that the mattress doesn’t trap heat. The ecoLight® foam has the durability, responsiveness, and comfort of memory foam, but it has a lower carbon footprint. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
- Second layer: 2 inches of Elastex® foam. This transition layer is designed to provide spring and support. Many mattresses use latex for similar reasons. Elastex® is free of the allergy-causing chemicals found in latex.
- Third layer: 6 inches of motion isolation support foam. This thick bottom layer greatly reduces motion transfer between sleepers, and it also enhances edge support.
Polysleep vs Douglas Mattress Cover
Polysleep
Douglas
Polysleep Mattress Cover
The Polysleep mattress has a two-tone cover. The bottom part features purple mesh fabric, and the top part of the liquid-repellent cover is white with a speckle-knit pattern.
The top cover has a zipper, allowing it to be removed for cleaning, but it is not machine washable. This could be problematic for anyone who chooses not to use a mattress protector or if the mattress is not properly protected while moving.
Douglas Mattress Cover
With its mountainscape stitching to its red and white colour profile, Douglas’ Canadian-centric cover shows the brand's homegrown roots. Cut from a single piece of fabric and woven together, the design is almost seamless. The red zipper running the entire length of the side wall and the red Douglas badge are the only elements that break up this impressive white canvas.
As for upkeep, the top half is machine washable, a bonus for anyone who can't stand the thought of spot cleaning their bed by hand. Douglas' cover is enhanced with moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres. This proprietary fabric is stretch-knit and very soft, but also extremely durable. The cover is great for staying cool and breathable through the night, so you won't wake up in a pool of sweat.
