Can Sleep Country Make a Made-in-China Boxed Mattress as Good as Canadian-Made Online Brands?
Sleep Country released its line of Bloom Mattresses in 2017, likely in response to the growing popularity of bed-in-a-box brands like Douglas and Juno.
At $1,199 CAD for a queen, Bloom Cloud is the brand’s most expensive mattress, priced above the Air ($999 CAD), Mist ($779 CAD), and Earth ($599 CAD) models. To justify its higher price tag, Bloom Cloud comes with a few more features than the cheaper models, including an additional comfort layer and zoned support.
Since Sleep Country is a Canadian chain, Bloom competes directly with Canadian-made brands like Douglas and Juno. However, despite being owned by a Canadian corporation, all Bloom mattresses are manufactured in China.
Bloom benefits from its parent company’s retail space, allowing prospective shoppers the opportunity to try before they buy. This may be especially important to some shoppers because unlike most mattress-in-a-box brands, Bloom does not offer risk-free returns as part of the sleep trial. Customers wanting to return their Bloom within the first 100 nights are only offered store credit and must pay a $65 restocking fee.

First Impressions: Straight Out of the Box
The Arrival
Bloom Cloud can be purchased from Sleep Country, either in-store or online. Shipping is typically free, but fees apply to addresses in Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. The mattress typically arrives within 3–5 business days in a box that requires two people to lift.
The Unboxing
Like other boxed mattresses, Bloom Cloud is simple to unpack. Once unboxed, the mattress fully expands to 10.5 inches in height within a few minutes.
The Look
Bloom Cloud has a neutral colour scheme of white and grey with pops of pale turquoise on the zipper and logo. The removable cover is a blend of polyester and cotton and has a quilted design across the entire top of the mattress.
The Feel
Bloom Cloud is the brand’s firmest mattress (see the next section for testing conducted by third-party engineers). That’s not to say this is an overly firm mattress. Sleepers who like to feel some ‘hug’ as they sink into the top layer of the mattress will be comfortable on the Cloud.
Official Test Results: How Do Engineers Rate Bloom Cloud?
The following results were determined by licensed 3rd-party engineers, commissioned by us:
To be able to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website, it was necessary to hire licensed 3rd-party engineers. Their independence and operating standards help to ensure the results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report is linked below and has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
*Be advised: Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.*
How Our Engineers Test Each Mattress:
Feel & Firmness | Bloom Cloud |
---|---|
Firmness: | 5.8 / 10 |
Edge support: | 6.5 / 10 |
Motion isolation: | 6.9 / 10 |
Bounce: | 3.2 / 10 |
Feel & Firmness
Bloom Cloud is a medium-firm mattress. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), it is rated at 5.8 / 10 on the firmness scale.
The Cloud is divided into three sections. The central third of the mattress is reinforced with firmer, synthetic latex foam. While sleepers will feel some ‘hug’ when they lie on the Cloud, there should be a bit less sinkage under the hips and stomach.
Edge Support
Foam mattresses are not known for having strong edge support. However, the Bloom Cloud mattress has above-average edge support, coming in at 6.5 / 10. Shoppers looking for a foam mattress that can support weight at the sidewalls should be pleased with this particular model.
Motion Isolation
Motion isolation for foam mattresses is usually good. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Bloom Cloud scored 6.9 / 10 in motion isolation, performing similarly to fellow Sleep Country-owned brand Endy (6.6 / 10).
However, if motion isolation is a consideration in your mattress purchase, you may want to take a closer look at the Canadian-made Douglas mattress (8.3 / 10). Douglas received the highest motion isolation score of any all-foam mattress tested by Mattress-Reviews.com.
Bounce
Because foam mattresses tend to provide good motion isolation, that usually translates to a lower bounce rating compared to innerspring and hybrid mattresses. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Bloom Cloud’s bounce score is low at 3.2 / 10.

Bloom Cloud Mattress Layers
Bloom Cloud has four different layers of foam. Like other combination foam mattresses, the layers work together to provide a good balance of comfort and support.
- First layer: 1 inch of aerated gel memory foam. The top layer of foam conforms to your body and provides pressure relief. Bloom claims that this foam increases airflow and reduces heat while you sleep. Layer density: Unspecified.
- Second layer: 1 inch of gel memory foam and synthetic latex foam. The second layer is divided into three sections, with the centre having a firmer latex foam than the memory foam used at the head and foot. The zoned support is designed to limit sinkage at the hips and stomach while allowing the lighter parts of the body to sink deeper into the foam. Layer density: Unspecified.
- Third layer: 1 inch of memory foam. This transition layer provides additional support and helps with motion isolation. Layer density: Unspecified.
- Fourth layer: 7.5 inches of support foam. This bottom support layer gives the Bloom Cloud its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too deep. Layer density: Unspecified.
Of note: Foam density information for Bloom is not available on the Sleep Country website. When Mattress-Reviews.com contacted Sleep Country customer service, we were advised that the foams are between 1.5 lbs/ft³ and 2.8 lbs/ft³.
Bloom Cloud Mattress Cover
The Bloom mattress cover is made from a blend of polyester and cotton. On the website, Sleep Country advertises that Bloom uses organic cotton. However, we were unable to find the fabric content breakdown on the law label to validate that the cover contains organic cotton. The colour of the cover was also very white (almost bleached-looking), which is unusual in fabrics that are considered to be 100% organic cotton.
The top portion of the Bloom Cloud cover is machine-washable.

Sleep Country introduced the Bloom mattress in 2017, marking the Canadian retailer’s entrance into the bed-in-a-box space. Since then, Sleep Country has acquired other boxed mattress brands, including the Canadian-made Endy in 2017. In 2018, Sleep Country received exclusive rights to sell the European bed-in-a-box brand, Simba mattress in Canada.
Sleep Country was founded in 1994 and is Canada’s largest brick-and-mortar mattress retailer.

Sleep Country uses Purolator ground shipping to deliver Bloom mattresses. Shipping is typically free, but a $120 flat-rate fee applies to Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories. Customers should expect their new Bloom mattress within 10 business days.
Like many bed-in-a-box companies, Sleep Country heavily promotes their Bloom Mattress sleep trial. At 100 nights, the sleep trial is average in length. However, there are limitations to this policy:
- The Bloom mattress can only be returned to Sleep Country for an in-store credit.
- Customers who decide to return the Bloom mattress must pay an exchange fee of $65 CAD.
This approach to sleep trials and returns is different from most bed-in-a-box brands, which typically provide full refunds for returned mattresses.
Mattress-Reviews.com did not complete the return process but received this information via the ‘Live Chat’ function on Sleep Country’s website.

Final Thoughts on Bloom Cloud
With online shopping becoming increasingly more convenient and attractive to consumers, it’s no wonder that chain stores like Sleep Country are looking to keep up with trends by selling bed-in-a-box options.
The Bloom Cloud comes with a lot of the features that customers expect from modern mattresses, like a removable cover and cooling gel memory foam. But with a price tag of more than $1,100 for a queen mattress, it’s hard to say if this made-in-China mattress is worth so much more than its Canadian-made rivals like Douglas ($799 CAD) or even Endy ($895).
Bloom Cloud performed fairly well in the engineer tests (commissioned by us), coming in about average in motion isolation, and above-average in edge support compared to other all-foam mattresses. Because of this, we feel safe in saying that this mattress should be comfortable for most sleepers. However, the slightly less firm sleep surface may not have enough support for heavier people, who may find that they sink too deeply into the surface of the bed.
The option to try before you buy will be attractive to customers who might be shy about purchasing a mattress sight-unseen, especially because Sleep Country does not offer free returns as part of its 100-night trial.
If you’re looking to get the most value from your mattress, there are several options that offer similar features at a lower price. To browse brands and read more reviews for mattresses within your budget, check out this year’s Best Mattresses.
