Product Overview
Cocoon by Sealy’s Essential model is an 8″ mattress made with 3 foam layers. The mattress has a firm feel, and is available in all the standard sizes from twin to king.
Priced at $799 for a queen-size, Cocoon Essential has great edge support and good motion isolation, making it a decent option for shoppers. That said, its 100-night trial and 10-year warranty may feel less competitive when compared to some other brands.
Although we ordered this product from Sealy’s website, the Cocoon by Sealy is no longer available for sale on the company’s website and can only be purchased through third-party retailers. Sleep trials and warranties may be subject to each retailers’ independent policies.
If you’re looking for a longer sleep trial, a more generous warranty, and better cooling features, the Canadian-made Douglas Original may be a better choice. It comes with a 365-night sleep trial, a 20-year warranty, and costs the same at $799 for a queen size. It is readily available on the Douglas website.

Sealy Cocoon Mattress Construction
Sealy Cocoon Essential is one of three models in the Cocoon line-up, the others being Cocoon Classic Soft and Cocoon Classic Firm. Cocoon Essential is advertised a having a medium feel, but third-party engineer testing that we commissioned puts it in the firm category.
Mattress Layers
At 8" tall, Sealy's Cocoon Essential features 3 foam layers: one for comfort, one transition layer, and one for support.
- 1st Layer: 1.5" of memory foam that contours to your body and offers pressure-point relief
- 2nd Layer: 1.5" of comfort foam designed to add a bit of bounce and help distribute your body weight more evenly across the mattress.
- 3rd Layer: 5" high-density foam that forms the base of the mattress, giving it structure and stopping sinkage for improved support while lying down.
Mattress Cover
The mattress cover on Sealy Cocoon Essential features a non-removable polyester fabric in a simple design. Sealy's website mentions that Cocoon by Sealy models incorporate a flame barrier made up of a polyester and rayon blend. While not machine washable, it is designed to offer a breathable surface for daily use. However, it doesn't include any extra cooling technologies.

Delivery & Other Policies
Note: We originally purchased the Cocoon by Sealy mattress directly from their website. However, it's no longer available for purchase there and can now only be bought through third-party retailers. As a result, shipping and return policies may vary depending on the seller. The information below reflects what was accurate at the time this review was written.
Sealy ships the Cocoon Essential mattress across Canada via FedEx, with free delivery included in most areas. Your mattress should arrive within 5–7 business days from the time of order. It comes compressed in a cardboard box, double-wrapped in durable plastic, and is ready to use the same day it's delivered.
Cocoon includes a 100-night sleep trial, and Sealy asks that you sleep on the mattress for at least 30 nights before initiating a return. If you decide it's not the right fit, Sealy will coordinate a return and donate the mattress to a local charity. However, your refund will be reduced by the cost of shipping, and the mattress must be clean and undamaged to qualify.
Sealy offers a 10-year warranty, which is standard for the mattress industry, covering common manufacturing defects.
In comparison, there are several other brands that offer more customer-friendly sleep trial and return policies. If you're looking for an extended trial and a longer warranty, consider Douglas Original. It comes with a 365-night risk-free sleep trial, a 20-year warranty, and free returns with full refunds; no additional fees or deductions.
Company Overview
Sealy began making custom mattresses in the 1880s, taking its name from the Texas town where it was founded. By the 1920s, it had become a major player in the mattress industry. The company introduced its well-known Posturepedic line in the early 1950s.
In 2012, Sealy merged with competitor Tempur-Pedic to form Tempur Sealy International, Inc. As of February 2025, the parent company now operates under the name Somnigroup International. It also owns the Stearns & Foster brand.

Currently, Sealy holds a "A-" (unaccredited) rating on the Better Business Bureau, but a customer review rating of only 1/5 STARS. On Trustpilot, Sealy is rated "Poor" with a customer review rating of 2.2/5.

All the content on our site, from product reviews to comparisons, is intended to provide general information to help guide your mattress search. We work with independent third-party engineers to test all mattress products we purchase, and we use the test results alongside public data to inform our reviews and comparisons.
The product details in each review reflect how the mattress performed at the time we purchased and tested it, as shown by the "Published" date.
Since brands can update their materials, pricing, or availability over time, we also note when the product was originally purchased, either directly in the article or on our disclaimer page, to maintain clarity and transparency.
If you see an "Updated" tag on a page with a more recent date than the published date, it simply means we've made editorial changes. It does not necessarily indicate any update to the mattress or its test data.
Finally, unless otherwise stated, any mention of where a mattress is made refers specifically to the product we received and tested.
