IKEA Mattress Construction
IKEA VALEVAG is available in two firmness options: firm and medium-firm. We reviewed the medium-firm option for this review. The foam used in IKEA Valevag is not CertiPUR-US® certified. When looking at it's layers, we noticed that it has limited cooling features, which can be noticeable during warmer nights, making it less ideal for hot sleepers who are sensitive to temperature shifts.
Mattress Layers
At 9.5" tall, the IKEA VALEVAG features 3 visible interior layers of foam and pocketed coils.
- 1st Layer: A 1.5" memory foam comfort layer offers cushioning and pressure relief. Designed to prevent sleepers from feeling the coils below, and has a foam density of 1.5 lb/ft³.
- 2nd Layer: A 6.5" pocketed coil transition layer provides the mattress with most of its structure and support. The individually wrapped coils also allow for some airflow within the mattress.
- 3rd Layer: A 0.25" foam support layer provides foundation beneath the coils, adding stability and helping insulate the mattress from the bedframe.
Mattress Cover
The VALEVAG mattress cover features a simple, modern look with light quilting and a soft knit feel. The fabric comes in white or light blue, depending on the firmness. Side handles are built in to help with lifting or rotating the mattress.
Mattress Testing
To ensure our mattress reviews are thorough and trustworthy, we buy the products ourselves and have them tested by independent licensed engineers (commissioned by us) with no stake in the results.
These third-party engineers apply a consistent testing process to every mattress using a detailed framework. Every mattress is tested the same way, whether it's foam or hybrid. Because these types perform differently, we rate them on separate scales to ensure the scores are fair and meaningful.
We believe independent testing is essential to producing reliable and meaningful comparisons. That's why all test results are reviewed and signed off by an APEGA-certified engineer, operating under a strict code of ethics.
We use the testing results and over 40 criteria to build our scoring methodology.
Tests and reviews without this level of professional oversight may be more prone to errors and unintended bias.

Delivery & Other Policies
IKEA ships mattresses across most of Canada through FedEx. Delivery starts at $39 for contactless service or $59 for in-home delivery. The final cost depends on your location.
VALEVAG comes with a 90-night sleep trial and a 10-year limited warranty. Returns must be completed in-store, and IKEA issues store credit rather than a cash refund.
You'll need to cover the mattress for transport using a plastic sheet, protective cover, or mattress bag, which you can buy at IKEA's delivery counter. While returns don't require re-rolling the mattress, it must be clean and undamaged. Pickup is available for a fee.
If you're looking for more flexibility, the Juno mattress includes a 120-night sleep trial, free returns with a full refund, and a longer 15-year warranty.

Customer Reviews & Feedback
Third-party review sites like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Trustpilot collect and publish customer feedback about companies and their products, and aren't controlled by the companies being reviewed. They offer a snapshot of overall customer satisfaction and highlight common issues shoppers might face. Checking ratings on sites like these can be a useful way for customers to make more informed purchasing decisions.
Despite the company's long reputation and affordable product lines, the company is rated "C-" (unaccredited) on Better Business Bureau with 1.22/5 stars. IKEA is also rated "Bad" on Trustpilot with a customer review rating of 1.4 out of 5 stars.
Should You Buy IKEA VALEVAG?

It comes with a 120-night sleep trial, free returns with a full refund, a 15-year warranty, and is competitively priced at $499 for a queen-size, making it a comparable alternative in the same price range.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are IKEA mattresses good?
IKEA mattresses are a go-to option for budget-conscious shoppers. However, the VALEVAG model lacks some features that are typically included with similarly priced competitors. For instance, Juno, which is similarly priced at $449 for a queen-size, offers CertiPUR-US® certified foams, a longer sleep trial with free returns and full refunds, cooling features like a cooling gel foam layer, and a free bedding bundle with the mattress.
Are IKEA mattresses CertiPUR®-US certified?
The absence of this certification on IKEA's website suggests that their mattresses are not made with CertiPUR-US® certified foam.
Do IKEA mattresses have a warranty?
Yes, IKEA mattresses come with a 10-year limited warranty that covers manufacturing defects. However, it does not cover accidental damage or typical wear and tear over time.
Does IKEA sell twin XL mattresses?
While IKEA does carry a range of mattress sizes, none of its models are currently available in a twin XL. For those specifically looking for a budget-friendly twin XL option, Juno is priced accessibly at just $499.
Can I wash an IKEA mattress cover?
The IKEA VALEVAG mattress does not come with a machine-washable cover. IKEA advises spot-cleaning stains with upholstery shampoo.
What IKEA mattress alternatives should I consider?
If you are looking for a quality mattress on a budget, you can consider Juno. It comes with a 120-night sleep trial and a 15-year warranty, as well as a free bedding bundle for a competitive price of $499 for a queen-size mattress.

All the content on our site, from product reviews to comparisons, is intended to provide general information to help guide your mattress search. We work with independent third-party engineers to test all mattress products we purchase, and we use the test results alongside public data to inform our reviews and comparisons.
The product details in each review reflect how the mattress performed at the time we purchased and tested it, as shown by the "Published" date.
Since brands can update their materials, pricing, or availability over time, we also note when the product was originally purchased, either directly in the article or on our disclaimer page, to maintain clarity and transparency.
If you see an "Updated" tag on a page with a more recent date than the published date, it simply means we've made editorial changes. It does not necessarily indicate any update to the mattress or its test data.
Finally, unless otherwise stated, any mention of where a mattress is made refers specifically to the product we received and tested.
