Nora

Meet the Mattress

The Nora is an American-made memory foam mattress with a medium-firm feel sold through Wayfair Canada, an e-commerce retailer specializing in home goods. It has very good motion isolation and edge support, a few cooling technologies, and a green tea infusion. At $899 for a queen size, it’s pricier compared to other foam mattress brands like Douglas.

You’re considering buying a foam mattress in a box, and you’ve come across options like Nora by Wayfair and Douglas Original. But which one is right for you?

Both are medium-firm all-foam mattresses, providing comfortable body contouring while balancing support. But Douglas offers a longer 365-night sleep trial and a 15-year warranty, while Nora only comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.

Priced at $799 for a queen, Douglas Original is more affordable than Nora, which costs $899 for the same size. Douglas also earned higher scores for motion isolation in our commissioned third-party engineer testing, and has more cooling features than Nora. Plus, Douglas mattresses come with free shipping for most Canadians, return pickup with a full refund, and a free bedding bundle with purchase.

Product Details: Douglas Original

Corner view of the Douglas Original mattress on a bed

Douglas Original is a popular Canadian-made foam mattress with a cooling gel comfort layer, great motion isolation, and a machine-washable cover. The Douglas Original is the brand’s entry-level model and costs just $799 for a queen.

At 6.7/10, Douglas’s firmness score lands it slightly on the firmer end of our medium-firm category, according to third-party engineer testing we commissioned. That said, the mattress’s cooling gel-foam layer still provides cushioning for pressure-point relief and comfort.

Douglas Original comes with a 365-night sleep trial and a 15-year warranty, which are both longer than average for the industry. Each mattress purchase also includes a free bedding bundle, with a cotton sheet set, duvet cover, down alternative duvet, pillow(s), pillow protector(s), and a mattress protector.

Product Details: Nora

Corner view of the Nora mattress on a bed

Nora is an American-made, 3-layer memory foam mattress sold through Wayfair Canada. It has very good motion isolation and edge support, a few cooling technologies, and a green tea infusion.

While it’s advertised as having a medium feel, our third-party engineer testing placed the Nora mattress in our medium-firm range, meaning it might feel a little firmer than you’re expecting. According to the mattress’s law label, it’s actually produced by Zinus, a brand that’s well-known for making its own green tea-infused mattresses. At $899 for a queen, the Nora is more expensive than some other foam mattresses on the Canadian market.

Nora comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty through Wayfair. The retailer will let you return the mattress during the sleep trial, but not for free. There’s a $49–$99 fee that gets deducted from your refund or store credit.

Mattress Construction

Both Douglas Original and Nora are 3-layer mattresses made entirely of CertiPUR-US® certified foam. The American-made Nora is a little taller at 12″. In comparison, the Douglas Original, which stands 10″ tall, is made in Canada and has a machine-washable cover.

Douglas Original

close up side view of the internal layers of the Douglas Original mattress

  • 1st Layer: 2″ ecoLight® cooling gel foam to offer a memory-foam-like feel, which provides body-contouring comfort and pressure relief. The cooling gel infusion also makes this layer breathable and cool to the touch.
  • 2nd Layer: 2″ Elastex® transition foam, which adds a level of bounciness and responsiveness similar to latex, while being latex-free.
  • 3rd Layer: 6″ of motion-isolation support foam that provides support, stability, and significantly reduces motion transfer across the mattress. This high-density base helps to minimize disturbances from movements on the other side of the bed, which is one reason why all Douglas mattresses are known for their great motion isolation.

Douglas mattresses have a recognizable white cover featuring a mountain design and a bold red zipper. The moisture-wicking CoolSense® cover is machine-washable and designed with cooling, moisture-wicking Infinitex™ fibres.

Nora

close up side view of the internal layers of the Nora mattress

  • 1st Layer: 2″ gel-infused memory foam as a top layer that helps contour to your body while the cooling gel draws heat away, supporting a cooler sleep.
  • 2nd Layer: 3″ of unidentified polyurethane transition foam that stops you from feeling the denser support layer beneath.
  • 3rd Layer: 7″ of denser unidentified polyurethane foam that gives the mattress most of its structure and durability. This layer is designed to provide consistent support and stops you from sinking too far into the mattress.

The Nora outer cover has a two-tone white-and-grey design, and is made from a blend of polyester, polyethylene, and nylon. It also has an inner flame-retardant cover made of rayon, carbon fibres, and polyester. You’ll need to spot-clean this cover since it isn’t removable.

Both Douglas Original and Nora landed in our medium-firm category in third-party engineer testing we commissioned, making them a good choice for all sleep positions.

They also both earned very good scores for edge support, which is helpful if you tend to sleep close to the sides of your bed, or if you like sitting on the edge to get in and out.

Where Douglas differs:

  • Douglas earned a higher score of 8.3/10 for motion isolation. This is a great score for a foam mattress. Motion isolation means the mattress limits movement across the surface, making it a strong pick for couples or light sleepers.
  • Douglas scored higher at 5.0/10 for its cooling features thanks to its cooling gel foam and Elastex® layer. This is good news for sleepers who run warm at night.

Where Nora differs:

  • The Nora mattress scored slightly lower for bounce than Douglas, with a 2.9/10. While bounce is a matter of personal preference, you might like the slow-moving feel of the Nora, or you may prefer a little more bounce to help you move around at night.

Douglas Original

Douglas offers free shipping to most locations across Canada through FedEx (fees may apply for remote areas). The mattress is compressed, sealed in two layers of durable plastic, and packaged in a cardboard box for safe transport. Once unboxed, the mattress expands to its full size within minutes, so you can sleep on it the same night.

Douglas mattresses come with a 365-night sleep trial (one of the longest in Canada), and the company offers free pickup with full refunds. Returned mattresses are either donated to local charities or recycled, depending on what's available in your area. All Douglas mattresses are backed by a 15-year warranty.

Nora

You can order Nora from Wayfair's Canadian website, and it ships directly to your home through various couriers, depending on your location. Shipping is free on orders over $50. The mattress arrives compressed in a box and wrapped in heavy-duty plastic, and should decompress in 48–72 hours, according to the Wayfair product page.

Nora comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year limited warranty, which is standard for the mattress industry. You can return the mattress for a refund or store credit, but you'll have to pay a $49–99 fee.

Final Recommendation

When you compare the Nora vs Douglas, a few things really stand out. Both mattresses received strong third-party engineer testing performance scores and are good options for any sleep style.
