Mattress Construction

The Douglas Original is made up of 3 layers, and is made in Canada. The Bloom Cloud has 4 layers and is made in Vietnam (according to the law label of the mattress we received).

Douglas

• 1st Layer: 2" ecoLight® cooling gel foam to offer a memory-foam-like feel, which provides body-contouring comfort and pressure relief. The cooling gel infusion also makes this layer breathable and cool to the touch.
• 2nd Layer: 2" Elastex® transition foam, which adds a level of bounciness and responsiveness similar to latex, while being latex-free.
• 3rd Layer: 6" of motion-isolation support foam that provides support, stability, and significantly reduces motion transfer across the mattress. This high-density base helps to minimize disturbances from movements on the other side of the bed, which is one reason why all Douglas mattresses are known for their great motion isolation.

The Douglas mattress cover stands out with its mountain design and bold red zipper. It's made from  CoolSense® fabric, which is woven with Infinitex™ fibres to help wick away moisture and keep the surface cooler while you sleep. The top cover is fully removable and machine washable, so it's easy to keep your mattress clean.

Bloom Cloud

• 1st Layer: 1" of gel-infused memory foam that helps disperse body heat and creates a cooler sleep surface while maintaining the pressure relief expected from memory foam
• 2nd Layer: 1" of gel memory foam with aerated latex foam split into three sections to provide zoned support. Softer memory foam is at the head and foot of the mattress to support lighter areas of the body. In the middle, firmer latex foam adds extra support for the lower back and hips.
• 3rd Layer: 1" of memory foam, which adds extra contouring for the body, providing added pressure relief
• 4th Layer: 7.5" of support foam that prevents your body from sinking too deeply into the mattress. This layer is infused with bamboo charcoal, which Bloom states will help maintain freshness over time.

The Bloom Cloud's cover design features pastel colours (turquoise, soft grey, and white). Turquoise details include the zipper along the upper edge, which attaches the top cover to the base fabric, with the embroidered Bloom logo at the foot of the mattress.

The white top cover is made of organic cotton and is machine washable. It can be unzipped from the base fabric, put in the washing machine on low heat, and air dried after washing.

Mattress Performance

In third-party engineer testing that we commissioned, both the Douglas Original and Bloom Cloud were rated medium-firm, though Douglas leans slightly firmer, while Bloom feels just a bit softer. This level of firmness usually works well for most sleepers, whether they sleep on their back, stomach, or side. They both also tested to have a below-average level of bounce for a foam mattress, which is good if you're a light sleeper. 

Both mattresses earned good scores for motion isolation. Strong motion isolation is especially important for light sleepers and couples, as it helps reduce disturbances from movement on the other side of the bed. 

Foam mattresses often incorporate some cooling features to offset the heat-trapping nature of foam. This was also the case for both Douglas and Bloom mattresses. They offer cooling features to help sleepers stay comfortable throughout the night. Douglas Original incorporates a moisture-wicking cooling cover, cooling gel foam, and breathable open-cell foam; whereas the Bloom Cloud features an organic cotton cover with copper infusion, gel-infused foam, and open-cell foam.

Where Douglas Differs:
