Douglas and Logan & Cove are two of the most well-known mattress brands in Canada and both brands have built up a loyal Canadian customer base. So, what are the backgrounds of Douglas and Logan & Cove?

Douglas was introduced in 2017 by Canadian bed-in-a-box company GoodMorning.com. Only available in Canada, Douglas was manufactured as a single-firmness mattress, designed using eight years worth of engineering data and customer feedback. GoodMorning.com has priced the Douglas be the best value Canadian-made mattress in the country. They offer the same level of customer service for the Douglas as they do for their flagship brand, not to mention an industry leading sleep trial and warranty.

Logan & Cove was introduced in 2018 by Canadian bed-in-a-box company GoodMorning.com. It is the first 14-inch luxury hybrid pillow-top mattress in Canada that comes compressed and shipped in a box. To create the optimal level of firmness, support, and comfort, GoodMorning.com used nine years worth of customer surveys and engineering data to design a mattress based on 30 criteria Canadians deem important. The Luxury Firm mattress that was launched to terrific early reviews was soon followed up with a Medium Plush version suited for sleepers who prefer a softer mattress.

With the rise in popularity of  ‘bed-in-a-box’, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than traditional mattresses. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery as boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some ‘bed-in-a-box’ companies even offer same day delivery to certain areas.

Both Douglas and Logan & Cove use FED/EX to deliver their mattresses directly to customers doors. In some cases, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck whilst the customer is at work.

Shipping time for Douglas and Logan & Cove is very similar. Both the Douglas mattress and Logan & Cove mattress will typically be delivered within 10 business days.

As with any bed-in-a-box brand, Douglas and Logan & Cove heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. Douglas and Logan & Cove both offer a 120-night sleep trial. This is one of the longest sleep trials offered in Canada.

If a customer wishes to return their Douglas mattress and Logan & Cove mattress within the sleep trial, both companies will arrange to pick the mattresses up and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees any of the three mattresses.

The Douglas mattress and Logan & Cove mattress were both delivered to us within the expected delivery time. Both mattresses were well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the boxes to protect the mattresses during shipping.

The Douglas mattress and Logan & Cove mattress boxes were both sealed with heavy duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when opening the box with sharp objects.

Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the designated bedroom.

The Douglas mattress and Logan & Cove mattress are both protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic and customers will need to unwrap the first layer of plastic in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.

Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled mattress on to the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the frame. Once in position, remove that outer plastic layer. After completing this process, customers will see an unrolled mattress. Simply unroll the mattress, making sure the top cover is facing up, and place the corners in the correct position on the frame of foundation.

Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Douglas mattress or Logan & Cove mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes. The Douglas mattress took 2 minutes to fully expand. The Logan & Cove mattress took 1 minute to fully expand.

The Douglas mattress and Logan & Cove mattress are constructed very differently. The Douglas mattress is a combination foam mattress, whereas the Logan & Cove is a hybrid mattress. While the Douglas is available in only one firmness option, Logan & Cove offers both a Medium Plush and Luxury Firm version.

One of the other major differences between the Douglas mattress and Logan & Cove mattress is the foam used for comfort, contouring, and pressure point relief, as well as support layers for motion isolation and edge support. Each mattress contains comfort, transition, and support layers, and these layers vary slightly in height and density.

Also, both mattresses have a unique top cover which showcases each brand’s mattress design. Top covers are sometimes washable, only the Douglas top cover is machine washable.

Douglas vs Logan & Cove Mattress Layers

Douglas

Logan & Cove

Douglas Mattress Layers

Douglas uses three layers of foam in the construction of its Canadian-made foam mattress.
  • First layer: 2 inches of ecoLight® cooling gel foam. This cooling gel encourages a restful sleep by ensuring that the mattress doesn’t trap heat. The ecoLight® foam has the durability, responsiveness, and comfort of memory foam, but it has a lower carbon footprint. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
  • Second layer: 2 inches of Elastex® foam. This transition layer is designed to provide spring and support. Many mattresses use latex for similar reasons. Elastex® is free of the allergy-causing chemicals found in latex.
  • Third layer: 6 inches of motion isolation support foam. This thick bottom layer greatly reduces motion transfer between sleepers, and it also enhances edge support.
Of note: As the name suggests, ecoLight® foam weighs less than traditional high-density memory foam (which starts at 4 to 5 lbs/ft3). Conversely, there is a lower petrochemical volume used in a cubic foot of ecoLight® as compared to a cubic foot of conventional memory foam. This has a positive impact on the environment in the form of a lower carbon footprint while still providing the same tactile benefits of denser foam.

Logan & Cove Mattress Layers

Both versions of the Logan & Cove mattress are made with the same six layers:

  • Cover fill: Silk-blend pillow-top fill. The lightweight fill resting immediately beneath the cover is soft to the touch, antimicrobial, heat-regulating, and breathable.
  • First layer: 0.75 inches of high-density cooling gel foam. The first of three consecutive cooling layers is primarily designed to offer immediate cushioning and a hint of body contouring.
  • Second layer: 0.5 inches of medium-density cooling gel foam. This thin layer works with the layers above and below to equalize weight distribution and set up the overall firmness of the mattress.
  • Third layer: 1 inch of cooling gel memory foam. This responsive material helps with cushioning and heat regulation.
  • Fourth layer: 1 inch of soy-infused foam. This soy-infused layer provides body contouring and pressure-point relief in the neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees.
    • Note: In the Medium Plush version, this layer is divided evenly into three zones, with denser foam under central third of the bed, and softer foam under where the knees and shoulders rest.
  • Fifth layer: 2 inches of soy-infused foam. This thicker layer of foam is the first layer beneath the pillow-top. It serves as a transitional support layer between the pocketed coils below and the cushioning above. It also further establishes the overall body contouring and pressure-relieving properties.
  • Sixth layer: 8 inches of individually pocketed coils. The pocketed coils are made from multi-tempered recycled steel. They provide robust support and motion isolation across the entire sleep surface. In the central third of the bed (under the hips), Logan & Cove uses a thicker gauge of steel in order to prevent the hips from sinking down too far. This arrangement promotes spinal alignment and reduces pressure points. Logan & Cove has one of the thickest centre thirds of any coil-based mattress.
Of note: The full perimeter of the mattress is encased with rigid support foam that allows you to sit comfortably on the edge of the bed without sliding off. Polyfiber layers above and below the pocketed coils make up the remaining 0.75 inches of Logan & Cove’s 14-inch vertical profile.

Douglas vs Logan & Cove Mattress Cover

Douglas Mattress Cover

With its mountainscape stitching to its red and white colour profile, Douglas’ Canadian-centric cover shows the brand's homegrown roots. Cut from a single piece of fabric and woven together, the design is almost seamless. The red zipper running the entire length of the side wall is the only element that breaks up this impressive white canvas.

As for upkeep, the top half is machine washable, a bonus for anyone who can't stand the thought of spot cleaning their bed by hand. Douglas' cover is composed of Natural Eucalyptus Fabric. This proprietary fabric is enhanced by fibers from sustainably farmed eucalyptus trees – stretch-knit and very soft, but also extremely durable. The cover is great for moisture wicking and breathability.

Logan & Cove Mattress Cover

The top cover of the Logan & Cove mattress is very soft. The white fabric is full of intricate details, including diamond tufting and stitching. This gives the pillow-top additional lift while also elevating the silk-blend fill, an effect known as ‘tack-and-jump.’ The top cover is crafted with eucalyptus-derived fabric, also known as Tencel®. It’s made from sustainably farmed eucalyptus trees, also great for moisture wicking and breathability.

The Logan & Cove mattress has a charcoal-black border with diamond-pattern stitching. This outer wall has a super-soft, gloss black band around the perimeter, leading to the Logan & Cove logo embroidered along the front. This highly textured and elaborate design is pretty unique compared to most other mattresses.

Douglas vs Logan & Cove: Environmental Sustainability

Consumers are becoming more environmentally conscious when making purchases. Retailers both in and out of the mattress industry have been incorporating more eco-friendly and ethical policies when selling products and choosing suppliers. GoodMorning.com Inc. carried out a survey in February 2017, discovering that almost 50% of Canadians are willing to spend more money for more environmentally friendly products. Therefore, in every review on Mattress-Reviews.com, we will highlight each mattress company’s green philosophy, as well as how prominent their policies are on their websites.
