With Fewer Features Than the Previous Version, Is Casper Element Actually a Good Value?
Casper Element is the lowest-priced model among Casper mattresses, slotting under Casper Original.
Casper’s last iteration of their budget mattress was the Casper Essential (no longer available). However, there are a number of key differences between the new and old model. The Element has fewer layers than the Essential. The Element is one inch shorter than the Essential. The Element doesn’t have a removable and machine-washable top cover like the Essential. To make up for the decline in features, the Element has a slightly lower price ($795 CAD for a queen) than the Essential ($850 CAD for a queen).
Also of note: Casper Element is made in the United States, whereas the Essential was made in Canada.
Competition among bed-in-a-box companies in Canada and the U.S. is fierce, especially among the value-priced brands. Casper has the benefit of being one of the most recognizable names in the industry, but its higher price compared to competitors like Juno ($499 CAD for a queen) could cause shoppers to question if the Casper name really is worth almost double the price.

First Impressions: Straight Out of the Box
The Arrival
Casper Element can be purchased online from the company’s website, as well as at select retail locations in Canada and the U.S; shipping is free for most addresses. There is a shipping fee for customers in Alaska, Hawaii, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. The mattress arrives within 1–6 business days in a box that requires two people to lift.
The Unboxing
Like other bed-in-a-box mattresses, Casper Element is simple to unpack. Once unboxed, the mattress fully expands to 10 inches in height within a few minutes.
The Look
Casper Element mattress features a two-tone grey colour scheme. The mattress cover is a simple knit design with flecks of darker grey.
The Feel
Casper Element is less firm than the previous version, Casper Essential (see the next section for testing conducted by third-party engineers). Casper Element’s top layer is three inches of perforated foam, which helps increase airflow and reduce heat while you sleep. The base layer is 6.5-inches of high-density foam.
Sleepers who like to feel some ‘hug’ as they sink slightly into the top layer of the mattress will be comfortable on the Element. Unlike memory foam mattresses of decades past, the Element’s perforated foam is less likely to feel like it’s trapping body heat.
Official Test Results: How Do Engineers Rate Casper?
The following results were determined by licensed 3rd-party engineers, commissioned by us:
To be able to accurately rate and compare the performance of the mattresses reviewed on this website, it was necessary to hire licensed 3rd-party engineers. Their independence and operating standards help to ensure the results remain unbiased, valid, and reliable. Each mattress was evaluated using the same strict methodology to protect the overall integrity of the results. The full report is linked below and has been given the official stamp of approval from an APEGA-certified engineer operating under a strict ethical code of conduct.
*Be advised: Mattress testing conducted outside of this professional standard poses a greater risk of validity errors or reviewer bias.*
How Our Engineers Test Each Mattress:
Test Scores | Casper Element |
---|---|
Firmness: | 4.6 / 10 |
Edge support: | 4.5 / 10 |
Motion isolation: | 5.9 / 10 |
Bounce: | 6.2 / 10 |

Feel & Firmness
Casper Element is a medium firmness mattress. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), it is rated at 4.6 / 10 on the firmness scale. The previous Casper budget mattress, Casper Essential, had a higher firmness rating (5.6 / 10) and a transition layer of memory foam between the top and bottom foam layers.
To compensate for the removed layer of memory foam, Casper Element has a taller top layer of foam (3 inches vs 2 inches) and a taller support layer of foam (6.5 inches vs 5 inches) compared to the outgoing model.
Most sleepers will feel some ‘hug’ when they lie on Casper Element, and will sink slightly into the comfort layer.

Edge Support
According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Casper Element’s edge-support rating is 4.5 / 10. This is about average for an all-foam mattress. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses, due to the structural rigidity of a spring or pocketed coil layer, tend to have higher edge-support ratings.
A lower edge-support rating could mean that owners will feel like they’re sinking into the foam when they are sitting on the side of the bed, making it harder to get out of bed compared to a mattress with a reinforced support layer.

Motion Isolation
Motion isolation in foam mattresses is usually very good and one of the main reasons couples make the switch from innerspring to all-foam. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Casper Element scored 5.9 / 10 on the motion isolation scale. However, this score is lower than many other foam-based mattresses tested on this site.

Bounce
Because foam mattresses tend to provide good motion isolation, that usually translates to a lower bounce rating compared to innerspring and hybrid mattresses. According to the testing conducted by third-party engineers (commissioned by us), Casper Element’s bounce score is 6.2 / 10.
This is an above-average rating for an all-foam mattress, and could mean that sleepers shouldn’t have too much difficulty changing positions in bed.

Support layer: | 6.5″ high-density foam |

Casper Element is available only in one firmness option, which is a similar approach to other bed-in-box brands like Mira, Bloom, and Juno.
Casper Element Mattress Layers

Casper Element contains two layers of foam. Like other all-foam budget mattresses, the layers of the Casper Element work together to provide a good balance of comfort and support.
- First layer: 3 inches of AirScape™ perforated polyurethane foam. The top layer of foam conforms to your body and provides pressure-point relief when you lie down. Casper claims that this foam increases airflow and reduces heat while you sleep. Layer density: Unspecified.
- Second layer: 6.5 inches of support foam. This bottom support layer gives Casper Element its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too deep. Layer density: Unspecified.
Of note: Foam density or origin information for Casper Element is not publicly available.

Casper Element Mattress Cover
Casper Element’s knit mattress cover uses polyester made from recycled plastic bottles, as well as cotton, rayon, and spandex.
Casper Element does not have a removable and machine-washable cover. The previous version of Casper’s budget mattress, the Essential, had this feature. That means that if you get a spill or stain on your Casper Element, the cover must be spot-cleaned. Customers who value the ability to easily clean their mattress should consider buying a mattress with a removable and machine-washable cover.

Casper Sleep is one of the most recognizable brand names in the bed-in-a-box marketplace. Although it wasn’t the first company to ship compressed foam mattresses in cardboard boxes to customers, Casper has excelled at creating a distinct brand image and receiving millions of dollars of funding from investors.
Today, Casper has expanded its product lineup to include four mattresses, along with various pillows, bed frames, bedding, and other sleep accessories.
Casper Element was released in 2020 to replace the outgoing mattress model, Casper Essential.

Final Thoughts on Casper Element
Among Casper’s expanding selection of mattresses, the Element isn’t its first attempt at a lower priced mattress. By replacing an outgoing model, Casper Essential, the Element is $55 CAD cheaper for a queen. However, it loses some key features, like a removable and machine-washable cover and a transition layer of memory foam.
Compared to competitors in the value-mattress segment, Casper Element is about average when it comes to foam construction, edge support, motion isolation, free delivery, and trial period. Casper Element’s most significant downside is its high price: $795 CAD for a queen. That price is squarely in the mid-range memory foam and hybrid mattresses category from many other bed-in-box brands, yet those competitors tend to offer greater overall value and feature sets at that price point.
If you’re looking to get the most value in an affordable mattress, there are several mattress options that offer similar (or better) features at a much lower price. To browse brands and read more reviews for mattresses within your budget, check out this year’s Best Mattresses.
