Sealy Posturepedic and Novosbed are two well-known players in the Canadian mattress scene, and both brands have built up a loyal Canadian customer base. So, what are the backgrounds of Sealy Posturepedic and Novosbed?

Sealy’s involvement in the mattress industry goes back to the 1880s, with the company taking its name from the Texas town where it first began producing made-to-order mattresses. The business grew rapidly and became an industry leader by the 1920s, contributing to many innovations and patents. The Posturepedic line was launched in the early 1950s, with an overall goal to “provide technology that delivers deep, targeted support right where you need it.” The large company also owns the other industry well-known mattress brand Stearns & Foster.

However, the Sealy Posturepedic line has seen significant competition in recent years from online mattress brands like Novosbed, innovative companies who ship directly to buyers and bypass the brick-and-mortar retail model.

GoodMorning.com released their first memory foam mattress, Novosbed, in 2009, making them one of the pioneers of the bed-in-a-box mattress industry. Their innovative culture soon went on to create the now universal idea of the ‘Sleep Trial,’ giving online mattress shoppers a way to bypass the traditional mattress store shopping experience and test out their new bed at home for as long as it actually takes to evaluate a mattress properly. With their flagship product, Novosbed, the company later introduced another new concept with Comfort+. This adjustable firmness system helps customers adjust the feel and comfort level of their mattress by adding an additional foam layer, free of charge.

Thanks to modern compression methods and the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than ever before. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery. Boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.

Delivery

Delivery of the Sealy Posturepedic mattress will vary by retailer based on stock availability and shipping schedules, averaging between 3 to 10 days to arrive after order confirmation. The model used in this review – the Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress – was ordered at Sleep Country Canada and was delivered within the estimated time frame.

Mattress retailers often use their own delivery service to deliver Sealy Posturepedic mattresses. The delivery is often ‘white glove,’ which means that the mattress is delivered to the room of your choice, placed on the surface of choice, the packaging is removed, and the old mattress is taken away.

Novosbed uses FedEx to deliver their mattresses directly to customers’ doors, and shipping is free throughout Canada and the U.S. In some cases, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home. The Novosbed mattress also arrived within the expected delivery time frame.

Trial Period

Each mattress retailer who stocks and sells Sealy Posturepedic mattresses may or may not offer a sleep trial. Those who purchase a Sealy Posturepedic mattress in Canada may be offered a sleep trial window, a period of time to test the mattress at home and return or exchange it within an announced time frame. These policies, along with fee and warranty structures, are dependent on the retailer.

Like many bed-in-a-box companies, Novosbed heavily promotes their in-home sleep trial. With a 120-night sleep trial, Novosbed has one of the longest sleep trials of all mattress brands.

Returns and Additional Fees

Mattress buyers who choose to purchase a Sealy Posturepedic at a retail store may incur restocking fees for returned mattresses; again, this is dependent on the individual retailer’s terms and conditions.

If a customer wishes to return their Novosbed mattress within the sleep trial period, the company will arrange to pick up their respective mattress and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for the Novosbed mattress.

Sealy Posturepedic

The Sealy Posturepedic mattress is not delivered in a box. Depending on the retailer, white-glove delivery service is often included in the price of a Sealy Posturepedic mattress.

Novosbed

The Novosbed mattress arrived in a box sealed with heavy-duty tape. Inside the box, the mattress was well-protected with layers of heavy-duty plastic. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. To prevent potential harm to your new mattress, remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects to remove any packaging.

Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. Use a ‘tip-and-pull’ motion to slowly slide the mattress out from its cardboard container. Simply tip the box from a vertical position down onto its side, and then pull the lightweight box away from the bundled mattress. We recommend you do this process in the room where you intend to use the mattress.

The mattresses is protected with two layers of heavy-duty plastic – one to compress it in a vacuum seal, and another to keep it tightly rolled in a cylinder shape.

Customers will need to unwrap the first layer in order to unroll the mattress, which will still be in its compressed form. Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled up mattress onto the designated bed frame. Next, like the end of a roll of tape, find and peel back the outer layer of plastic. You can use the momentum of unrolling the compressed mattress along the bed frame to help remove the rest of this layer, which could be up to a few meters long. After completing this process, the mattress will be lying unrolled before you.

Next, cut the final layer of plastic. The vacuum seal now broken, the mattress will quickly begin to decompress. Remove this final layer of plastic as the mattress expands to its full height. With Novosbed, full expansion took 1 to 3 minutes depending on the firmness.

Sealy Posturepedic and Novosbed are both combination foam mattresses, and both are available in multiple firmness options.

Some of the major differences between the Sealy Posturepedic mattress and the Novosbed are the different types of foam used for comfort and support. Each mattress contains comfort, transition, and support layers, and these layers vary slightly in height and density.

Each mattress has a unique top cover which showcases the brand’s personality and design aesthetic. Top covers are sometimes washable, and of the two mattresses in this review, only the Novosbed has a machine-washable cover.

Novosbed Firm

Sealy Posturepedic Mattress Layers

The Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress contains six layers of foam from its pillow top down to its bottom support tier:

  • The top comfort layers of the Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress are a combined 4.5″ of OptiCool™ Gel Memory Foam. This collection of gel-infused foam is designed to remove excess heat while giving the mattress surface a bit of “hug.”
  • The middle transitions layers of the Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress are a combined 3.5″ of Optisense™ Memory Foam.  These layer works with the first comfort layer to provide an element of support, reducing motion transfer, providing a stable sleep surface throughout the night.
  • The bottom layer of the Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford mattress is 5″ of OptiCore™ support foam. This firmer support layer gives the mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too far.

Novosbed Mattress Layers

Each Novosbed mattress contains four layers of foam. The soft, medium, and firm options all have different constructions and foam densities to customize the firmness level of the mattress.

Novosbed Soft Mattress:
  • The first layer of the Novosbed mattress is 1” of high-density gel-infused memory foam. The ultra-durable top layer delivers responsive cooling and conforms to the body for a medium-soft feel. Foam density: 3.7 lbs/ft3.
  • The second layer of the Novosbed mattress is 1” of premium airflow foam. This breathable layer allows heat to dissipate effectively while suppressing odor build-up. Foam density: 2 lbs/ft3.
  • The third layer of the Novosbed mattress is 2” of open-cell pneumatic memory foam. This transition layer reduces motion transfer while providing further airflow. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
  • The final layer of foam in the Novosbed mattress is 7” of premium support foam. This durable bottom layer further eliminates motion transfer by distributing bodyweight and also helps the mattress maintain its structural integrity. Foam density: 1.8 lbs/ft3.
Novosbed Medium Mattress:
  • The first layer of the Novosbed mattress is 1″ of premium airflow foam. This top layer allows for additional airflow, keeping heat from getting trapped near the surface. Foam density: 2 lbs/ft3.
  • The second layer of the Novosbed mattress is 1” of high-density memory foam. This additional comfort layer provides pressure-point relief. Foam density: 4 lbs/ft3.
  • The third layer of the Novosbed mattress is 2” of high-density memory foam. This ultra-durable transition layer further reduces motion transfer. Foam density: 4 lbs/ft3.
  • The final layer of foam in the Novosbed mattress is 7” of premium support foam. This durable bottom layer further eliminates motion transfer by distributing bodyweight and also helps the mattress maintain its structural integrity. Foam density: 1.8 lbs/ft3.
Novosbed Firm Mattress:
  • The first layer of the Novosbed mattress is 2″ of open-cell pneumatic memory foam. The top layer enhances cooling and breathability while giving the surface a firm feel. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
  • The second layer of the Novosbed mattress is 1” of open-cell pneumatic memory foam. In combination with the first layer, this transition foam provides pressure-point relief. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
  • The third layer of the Novosbed mattress is 1” of high-density memory foam. This responsive transition layer provides additional body contouring.

Sealy Posturepedic vs Novosbed Mattress Cover

Sealy Posturepedic Mattress Cover

The Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Guilford’s pillow-top cover is quilted and button tufted to emphasized its soft surface. The white polyester fabric is further decorated in a quatrefoil pattern throughout, a theme that continues down along the full border of the side walls. Two other highlights of this two-tone exterior are the decorative piping along the outer edges and two fabric handles on either side of the mattress, making it easier to move or rotate the piece. All in all, the cover has an elegant look which matches the theme of this stylish, luxury line.

According to the product tag, the mattress cover is a blend of fabrics: 100% polyester for the sleep surface, and a mix of 69% cotton and 31% polypropylene for the mattress border.

The pillow-top cover is neither removable nor machine washable. Therefore, the only option for cleaning this mattress is spot cleaning.

Novosbed Mattress Cover

This distinctive Novosbed cover is an expression of the luxury that lies beneath. The soft sleep surface is woven from a blend of stretch-knit polyester and Tencel®, while the lower side walls are covered with furniture-grade upholstery. This white and chambray-blue exterior is designed not only for an attractive, signature look, but also for functionality.

The top cover is machine washable, with simple cleaning instructions:

  1. Zip off the upper portion of the cover;
  2. Put in the washing machine on a gentle cycle;
  3. Tumble-dry on low, or air dry.

Sealy Posturepedic vs Novosbed: Environmental Sustainability

Consumers are becoming more environmentally conscious when making purchases. Retailers both in and out of the mattress industry have been incorporating more eco-friendly and ethical policies when selling products and choosing suppliers. GoodMorning.com Inc. carried out a survey in February 2017, discovering that almost 50% of Canadians are willing to spend more money for more environmentally friendly products. Therefore, in every review on Mattress-Reviews.com, we will highlight each mattress company’s green philosophy, as well as how prominent their policies are on their websites.
