As one of the most seasoned brands in the mattress industry, Serta proudly calls themselves the #1 mattress manufacturer in the USA. With almost 80 years in the business, Serta is a leader in driving innovation in mattress design, most notably with pocket coil mattresses.
In addition to its growing mattress catalogue, the company also sells a number of general and more niche products such as pillows, blankets, bed frames, crib mattresses, and even pet beds.
More recently, after forming a partnership with retail giant Canadian Tire, Serta began manufacturing the Serta Chinook. This mattress has since become the first Canadian Tire mattress-in-a-box and also the first Canadian Tire foam mattress.

Thanks to modern compression methods and the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than ever before. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery. Boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.
In the areas where it offers delivery, Canadian Tire works with a network of shipping and delivery partners. There is a shipping fee and customers can expect for their new mattress to be delivered within 1-5 business days.
Canadian Tire’s delivery options include:
- Standard, which includes the option of porch delivery at no extra charge;
- In-home delivery, where the mattress is delivered to a room of the customer’s choice; and
- In-home delivery with unpacking, an option that’s actually quite similar to what’s known in some companies as a “white glove delivery.”
The Chinook mattress is offered with Serta’s 100 Day Comfort Trial. At 100 nights, this sleep trial is average in length. Under the terms of this sleep trial, buyers must keep their mattresses for the full 100 nights before they can initiate a return by contacting Serta. During this phone call, Serta will give the customer instructions as to where the mattress can be dropped off for donation.
After the buyer has completed the return by donating their mattress, Serta will issue a receipt that can then be taken to Canadian Tire and exchanged for a full refund.
It is worth noting that Mattress-Reviews.com did not complete the return process, but received this information after speaking with Serta’s Customer Service representatives on the telephone.
Serta Chinook Mattress: Out of the Box

The Serta Chinook mattress we ordered through Canadian Tire’s website was in good shape when we picked it up in-store. There were no signs of wear and tear visible on the box. For those who would be opting for a delivery option, however, it’s not unusual for boxes to arrive with mild discolouration as well as signs of wear and tear from the transit process. In anticipation of this, many bed-in-a-box retailers will wrap their products in multiple layers of plastic in order to keep the mattress protected during the journey.
The Serta Chinook’s mattress box was sealed with staples. Since only a firm grip was needed in order to open the package, this meant that scissors weren’t needed to open up the box.
The box has handles on top for quick adjustment and once the box is opened, the compressed mattress sits quite loose inside of the box. Both of these features made the Serta Chinook easy to remove from the box. We recommend a ‘tip-and-pull’ motion to slowly slide the mattress out of the box. In other words, tip the box away from a vertical position down onto its side, and then pull the lightweight box away from the bundled mattress. It’s most efficient to do this process in the room where you intend to use the mattress.
The Serta Chinook mattress is protected with five layers of plastic – four thin outer layers and one thicker layer inside.
Customers will need to slice open the outers layer to unroll the mattress, which at this stage is still compressed. Next, unfold the mattress and place it along the designated bed frame. Cut the final layer of plastic. With the vacuum seal now broken, the mattress will begin to decompress. Remove this final layer of plastic as the mattress expands to its full height. With the Serta Chinook mattress, full expansion took approximately 24 hours.
Serta Mattress: Construction
Construction | Serta |
---|---|
Mattress height: | 9" |
Number of layers: | 2 |
Comfort layer: | 2" gel memory foam |
Support layer: | 7” soy-infused support foam |
Cover materials | 100% polyester |
Machine washable: | No |
Made in: | Canada |
The Serta Chinook is a combination foam mattress. Combining gel-infused foam atop a thicker support layer, this mattress results in a medium firmness level.
The Serta Chinook is offered in just one firmness option. This tracks pretty closely with the “one-size-fits-all” strategy that a lot of mattress-in-a-box manufacturers have adopted.
Serta Chinook Mattress Layers
The Serta Chinook mattress contains two layers of foam:
- First layer: 2 inches of cooling gel-infused foam. This layer promotes breathability as well as the comfortable, cushioned feel that’s often associated with foam mattresses. Foam density: Undisclosed.
- Second layer: 7 inches of support foam. This layer brings firmness, stability, and support to the mattress. Foam density: Undisclosed.
Of note: The foam density of the Serta Chinook is not publicly disclosed.
Serta Chinook Mattress Cover
True to its name, the Serta Chinook sports a white and grey colour patterned to illustrate the wind. The cover is entirely made of polyester according to the law label attached to the mattress. Although many boxed mattresses come with machine-washable covers, the cover of the Serta Chinook is spot-clean only.

Who buys a serta chinook mattress?
The Serta Chinook will likely appeal to buyers who are willing to invest in their comfort but who don’t want to break the bank in order to do so. To that end, the Serta Chinook boasts a medium firmness level, decent edge support, and above-average motion isolation scores, while performing to expected standards on bounce.
That being said, the Serta Chinook does have its weaknesses. Compared to a similarly priced brand like Douglas, the Chinook has a shorter sleep trial, a shorter warranty, and a cover that is not machine washable. In addition, the Chinook’s lack of available mattress size options beyond full and queen may be restricting for buyers who are looking for other sizes, notably king and twin. Finally, on a more cost-related note, it’s also worth noting that shipping fees may add another layer of expenses to buying this mattress.
Buyers looking for a similar mattress with more sizes, higher performance scores, free shipping, and a lower price, may want to check out our Douglas mattress review.
If you’re more of a bargain hunter, for a mattress that’s equally as comfortable as the Serta Chinook, yet priced even lower, you might want to try the Juno, a mattress retailing at $449 for a queen. You can read our Juno review here.
Buy a Serta Chinook if you want:
- A mattress-in-a-box you can purchase in store
- A mattress produced and distributed by two well-known brands
- A mattress with above-average motion isolation
- A mattress made in Canada
