Casper, Saatva, and Novosbed are three of the most well-known mattress brands in the USA and Canada, and all three brands have built up a loyal customer base. So, what are the backgrounds of Casper, Saatva, and Novosbed?

Casper introduced their bed-in-a-box in 2014 by launching a single firmness, ‘one-size-fits-all’ mattress. The Casper mattress initially launched in the USA but has since expanded to Canada and a selection of European countries. Having received tens of millions of dollars of funding from the likes of Ashton Kutcher and Target Corporation, the Casper mattress quickly became the market leader in the bed-in-a-box space.

Saatva is one of the only direct-to-consumer mattress companies selling mattresses with springs and a pillow top. In 2017, the Saatva mattress became available to some Canadian cities, including Toronto, Vancouver, and Edmonton, and extended the white-glove delivery service they offer in the USA to these select cities.

GoodMorning.com released their first memory foam mattress, Novosbed, in 2009, making them one of the pioneers of the bed-in-a-box mattress industry. Their innovative culture soon went on to create the now universal idea of the ‘Sleep Trial,’ giving online mattress shoppers a way to bypass the traditional mattress store shopping experience and test out their new bed at home for as long as it actually takes to evaluate a mattress properly. With their flagship product, Novosbed, the company later introduced another new concept with Comfort+. This adjustable firmness system helps customers adjust the feel and comfort level of their mattress by adding an additional foam layer, free of charge.

With the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, memory foam mattresses are now shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than mattresses purchased from traditional retail stores. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery as boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same day delivery to certain areas.

Saatva delivers via white-glove delivery,  bringing a fully expanded mattress to the customer’s home and setting it up. Locally-contracted logistics companies are contracted to fulfill the white-glove delivery service.

Casper uses UPS and Novosbed use FedEx to deliver the compressed and boxed mattresses. Both mattresses will be delivered directly to customers’ doors throughout most parts of Canada. Because the Casper mattress and Novosbed mattress are shipped in a box, the mattresses can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home.

Shipping time for Casper, Saatva, and Novosbed are very different. The Casper mattress will be delivered within 6 business days, the Novosbed will be delivered within 10 business days, and the Saatva will be delivered within 18 business days.

As with any bed-in-a-box brand, Casper, Saatva, and Novosbed heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. Saatva and Novosbed have one of the longest sleep trials of all mattress brands with a 120-night sleep trial. Casper offers only a 100-night sleep trial.

If a customer wishes to return their Casper mattress, Saatva mattress, or Novosbed mattress within the sleep trial, all three companies will arrange to pick up the mattresses and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for the Casper mattress or Novosbed mattress; however, Saatva will charge a $99 USD non-refundable shipping fee.

The Saatva mattress is not delivered in a box and white-glove delivery is included within the price.

The Casper mattress and Novosbed mattress were both delivered to us within the expected delivery time. Both mattresses were well protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the boxes to protect the mattresses during shipping.

Both the Casper mattress and Novosbed mattress boxes were sealed with heavy-duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. Remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects to open the box.

Once opened, the compressed mattress is easy to remove from the box. A simple ‘tip-and-pull’ motion is what we recommend. Simply tip the box from a vertical position into a horizontal position and pull the mattress out of the box. We recommend doing this process in the room where you intend to use the mattress.

Both the Casper mattress and Novosbed mattress are protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic and customers will need to unwrap the first layer in order to change the mattress from a cylindrical shape into a flat, albeit compressed, shape.

Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled mattress onto the designated bed frame, find the end of the outer layer plastic, pull it loose, and use the resulting momentum to roll the mattress into position on the frame. Once in position, remove that outer plastic layer. After completing this process, customers will see a folded and unrolled mattress. Simply unfold the mattress (the top cover will be facing up), and place the corners in the correct position on the frame of foundation.

Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Casper mattress or Novosbed mattress will start decompressing. Remove this final layer and the mattress should expand to its full height within a few minutes. Both the Casper mattress and Novosbed mattress expanded to their full height within 3 minutes.

The Casper is a combination foam mattress and is only available in one firmness option. The Saatva is a hybrid mattress and is available in three firmness options and two mattress heights. The Novosbed mattress uses high-density memory foam and is available in three different firmness options: soft, medium, and firm.

Some of the major differences among the Casper, Saatva, and Novosbed mattresses are the different types of foam used for comfort and support. Each mattress contains comfort, transition, and support layers, and these layers vary slightly in height and density.

Also, each mattress has a unique top cover which showcases each brand’s mattress design. Top covers are sometimes washable, and out of the three mattresses tested, only the Novosbed mattress has a machine-washable top cover.

Casper vs Saatva vs Novosbed Mattress Layers

Novosbed

Casper Mattress Layers

The Casper mattress contains four layers of foam:

  • The first layer of the Casper mattress is 1.5″ of ‘open-cell’ polyurethane foam. This top layer is designed to provide comfort and heat-regulating performance.
  • The second layer of the Casper mattress is 1.5″ of memory foam. This layer works with the first comfort layer to provide an element of support, will help conform to your body shape, and assist with pressure-point relief.
  • The third layer of the Casper mattress is 1.5″ of zoned polyurethane foam. This layer acts as a transitional layer between the two comfort layers and the final support layer. This layer is ‘zoned,’ meaning the firmness varies under the shoulder and hip areas.
  • The final layer of foam in the Casper mattress is 5.5” of support foam. This layer gives the Casper mattress its structure and prevents sleepers from sinking in too deep.
  • Casper does not provide density information for any of their layers of foam.

Saatva Mattress Layers

The Saatva mattress contains four layers:

  • The first layer of the Saatva mattress is 3” of bio-foam and this is used to provide comfort, contouring, and pressure-point relief.
  • The second layer of the Saatva mattress is a 5/8″ soft foam layer and a 3/8″ Visco lumbar pad. This is used to provide support underneath the bio-foam.
  • The third layer of the Saatva mattress is a 4” individually wrapped coil system. The individually pocketed coils serve to contour with body movements and relieve pressure points.
  • The final layer of the Saatva mattress is 7” of connected hourglass-shaped coils. This base support system is composed of recycled tempered steel and provides a sturdiness to the upper layers of the mattress.

Novosbed Mattress Layers

Each Novosbed mattress contains four layers of foam. The soft, medium, and firm options all have different constructions and foam densities to customize the firmness level of the mattress.

Novosbed Soft Mattress:
  • The first layer of the Novosbed mattress is 1” of high-density gel-infused memory foam. The ultra-durable top layer delivers responsive cooling and conforms to the body for a medium-soft feel. Foam density: 3.7 lbs/ft3.
  • The second layer of the Novosbed mattress is 1” of premium airflow foam. This breathable layer allows heat to dissipate effectively while suppressing odor build-up. Foam density: 2 lbs/ft3.
  • The third layer of the Novosbed mattress is 2” of open-cell pneumatic memory foam. This transition layer reduces motion transfer while providing further airflow. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
  • The final layer of foam in the Novosbed mattress is 7” of premium support foam. This durable bottom layer further eliminates motion transfer by distributing bodyweight and also helps the mattress maintain its structural integrity. Foam density: 1.8 lbs/ft3.
Novosbed Medium Mattress:
  • The first layer of the Novosbed mattress is 1″ of premium airflow foam. This top layer allows for additional airflow, keeping heat from getting trapped near the surface. Foam density: 2 lbs/ft3.
  • The second layer of the Novosbed mattress is 1” of high-density memory foam. This additional comfort layer provides pressure-point relief. Foam density: 4 lbs/ft3.
  • The third layer of the Novosbed mattress is 2” of high-density memory foam. This ultra-durable transition layer further reduces motion transfer. Foam density: 4 lbs/ft3.
  • The final layer of foam in the Novosbed mattress is 7” of premium support foam. This durable bottom layer further eliminates motion transfer by distributing bodyweight and also helps the mattress maintain its structural integrity. Foam density: 1.8 lbs/ft3.
Novosbed Firm Mattress:
  • The first layer of the Novosbed mattress is 2″ of open-cell pneumatic memory foam. The top layer enhances cooling and breathability while giving the surface a firm feel. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
  • The second layer of the Novosbed mattress is 1” of open-cell pneumatic memory foam. In combination with the first layer, this transition foam provides pressure-point relief. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft3.
  • The third layer of the Novosbed mattress is 1” of high-density memory foam. This responsive transition layer provides additional body contouring.

Casper vs Saatva vs Novosbed Mattress Cover

Casper

Saatva

Novosbed

Casper Mattress Cover

The Casper mattress has a simple two-tone cover. The side fabric used on the Casper mattress cover is a heavy-duty, charcoal-colored, speckled fabric. This is a nice contrast to the sharp, stretchy, and white polyester and lycra top cover. The Casper mattress set the trend for the ‘less-is-more’ mattress aesthetic, and this approach to mattress design has been adopted by many new mattress brands.

Saatva Mattress Cover

The Saatva mattress cover is white with gold writing and trim that boldly states the brand name and its use of organic cotton. The cover is sewn onto the mattress like most traditional mattresses and is not removable, nor washable. This means part of the upkeep of this mattress is thorough spot cleaning when spills and stains occur.

Novosbed Mattress Cover

This distinctive Novosbed cover is an expression of the luxury that lies beneath. The soft sleep surface is woven from a blend of stretch-knit polyester and Tencel®, while the lower side walls are covered with furniture-grade upholstery. This white and chambray-blue exterior is designed not only for an attractive, signature look, but also for functionality.

The top cover is machine washable, with simple cleaning instructions:

  1. Zip off the upper portion of the cover;
  2. Put in the washing machine on a gentle cycle;
  3. Tumble-dry on low, or air dry.

Casper vs Saatva vs Novosbed: Environmental Sustainability

Consumers are becoming more environmentally conscious when making purchases. Retailers both in and out of the mattress industry have been incorporating more eco-friendly and ethical policies when selling products and choosing suppliers. GoodMorning.com Inc. carried out a survey in February 2017, discovering that almost 50% of Canadians are willing to spend more money for more environmentally friendly products. Therefore, in every review on Mattress-Reviews.com, we will highlight each mattress company’s green philosophy, as well as how prominent their policies are on their websites.
