Hamuq and Brunswick are two of the top hybrid mattress brands in Canada, and both companies have built up a loyal Canadian customer base. So, what are the backgrounds of these two innovative companies?
Launched in 2016 and based in Toronto, Ontario, Hamuq is one of the of the only Canadian-made mattresses available to order online with springs, foam, and a pillow-top.
Brunswick was introduced by GoodMorning.com in late 2018 as a classic spring mattress, made for modern Canadians. The design, build, and comfort are meant to be refreshingly simple and familiar while cherry picking some of the best innovations in modern mattress making (e.g. hemp-based fabric, zoned pocketed springs). The spring-foam hybrid is sold online, compressed in a box, and shipped directly to customers’ doors throughout the country.

Thanks to modern compression methods and the rising popularity of the bed-in-a-box, mattresses can now be shipped far more efficiently and conveniently than ever before. Customers no longer need to take a day off work to accept a delivery. Boxed beds are now delivered with the same convenience as most Amazon orders. Some bed-in-a-box companies even offer same-day delivery to certain areas.
Hamuq uses UPS to deliver their mattresses to Canadians. Brunswick uses FedEx. Both mattresses will be delivered directly to customers doors throughout most parts of Canada. In some cases, the packages can even be left on a porch or deck while the customer is away from home.
Shipping times for Hamuq and Brunswick vary. The Hamuq mattress will be delivered within 6 business days, whereas the Brunswick mattress will be delivered within 10.
As with any bed-in-a-box brand, Hamuq and Brunswick heavily promote their in-home sleep trials. Brunswick has the longest sleep trial of both mattress brands at 120 nights. Hamuq offers only 101 nights for their trial period.
If a customer wishes to return their Hamuq or Brunswick within the sleep trial, both mattress companies will arrange to pick up their mattress and issue a full refund. There are no additional return or restocking fees for either product.

Both the Hamuq and Brunswick mattresses were delivered to us within the estimated time frames. Both were well-protected by heavy-duty plastic layers within the boxes to keep the mattresses in good condition during shipping.
The Hamuq mattress and Brunswick mattress boxes were both sealed with heavy-duty tape. Customers will definitely need scissors or a knife to open the box. To avoid harm to the mattress, remember to be extra careful when using sharp objects to opening the packaging.
Once opened, the compressed mattresses are easy to remove from the box. We recommend a ‘tip-and-pull’ motion to slowly slide each mattress out from its cardboard container. Simply tip the box from a vertical position down onto its side, and then pull the lightweight box away from the bundled mattress. It’s most efficient to do this process in the room where you intend to set up the bed.
The Hamuq and Brunswick are both protected with multiple layers of heavy-duty plastic. Customers will need to unwrap the outer layers to unroll the mattress, which will still be in its compressed form. Some helpful advice at this stage is to place the rolled up mattress onto the designated bed frame. Next, like the end of a roll of tape, find and peel back the outer layer of plastic. You can use the momentum of unrolling the compressed mattress along the bed frame to help remove the rest of this layer, which could be up to a few meters long. After completing this process, the mattress will be lying unrolled before you.
Next, cut the final layer of plastic and the new Hamuq mattress or Brunswick mattress will begin to decompress. Remove this final layer of plastic and the mattress should begin to expand to its full height within a few seconds. Both the Hamuq and Brunswick expanded to their full heights in under 10 minutes.

Hamuq and Brunswick are both hybrid mattresses. Both are available only in one firmness option, and are both compressed, rolled and shipped in a box.
Some of the major differences between the Hamuq and Brunswick are the different types of foam used for comfort, contouring, and pressure point relief, as well as the springs used for support. Each mattress contains comfort, transition, and support layers, and these layers vary slightly in height and density.
Also, both mattresses have a unique top cover which showcases each brand’s mattress design. Top covers are sometimes washable, but neither the Hamuq mattress or Brunswick mattress has a machine-washable top cover.
Hamuq vs Brunswick Mattress Layers
Hamuq

Brunswick

Hamuq Mattress Layers
The Hamuq mattress contains three layers:
- The first layer of the Hamuq mattress is 2.5” of cooling gel foam and this is used to provide optimal comfort and temperature performance.
- The second layer of the Hamuq mattress is a 1.5” of memory foam and this is used to provide pressure point relief and body contouring.
- The final layer of the Hamuq mattress is 8” of individually pocketed coils and they are used to help isolate movement and provide support.
Brunswick Mattress Layers
The Brunswick mattress contains five primary layers with a few other transition materials. Like many of the multi-layer boxed mattresses on the market today, each layer of the Brunswick mattress works with the others to create a distinct level of comfort and support.
- First layer: 0.25 inches of holofibre fill. This fluffy and lightweight material fills the tufting of the cover and gives the mattress its distinct shape and initial softness.
- Second layer: 0.75 inches of super-soft gel foam. This first layer of foam is notable for its softness, contributing to the pillowy feel and comfort you experience as you lie down on the mattress. Layer density: 1.8 lbs/ft³.
- Third layer: 1 inch of cooling gel memory foam. This upper layer works with the surrounding foam to provide comfort and heat regulation. Foam density: 2.5 lbs/ft³.
- Fourth layer: 1 inch of high-density zoned eco-foam. This soy-infused transition layer provides body contouring and pressure-point relief in the neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. Divided into three sections, the central zone has increased firmness to complement the zoned springs described below. The foam is created from a blend of traditional polyurethane and environmentally friendly soy oil. Foam density: 1.8 lbs/ft³.
- Fifth layer: 8 inches of multi-tempered pocketed springs with a 3-inch foam encasement perimeter. This layer of individually wrapped springs contributes substantially to the mattresses perceived firmness, as well as its levels of support and overall integrity. The spring design prevents motion transfer due to its independent action. Like the foam layer immediately above it, this layer is zoned. The central third has thicker springs that take more weight to compress. The entire layer is surrounded by a rigid foam encasement to enhance edge support. Coil count (queen): 828.
Hamuq vs Brunswick Mattress Cover
Hamuq

Brunswick

Hamuq Mattress Cover
The top cover of the Hamuq mattress is a blend of cotton and felt, white and soft to touch. With a traditional ‘tack-and-jump’ style design often found on hybrid mattresses, the Hamuq cover is simple yet pleasing to the eye. The Hamuq top cover is not machine washable and can be cleaned only through spot cleaning.
Brunswick Mattress Cover
Appearance
The Brunswick mattress has a distinct cover that makes it instantly recognizable among its competitors in the online mattress industry. The white Euro-top cover is tufted in channels from end to end along its top portion and sidewalls. This gently lifts the fabric, making the mattress seem soft and inviting even before you lie down. Most notably, the green checkered gusset spans the full perimeter and gives Brunswick its colour and personality.
Materials
Brunswick’s white cover is a modern blend of polyester, hemp, and spandex. These stretchable and breathable materials are further strengthened by hemp, a material that few other bed-in-a-box mattresses have yet to adopt. Hemp is naturally antimicrobial and has three times the tensile strength of cotton. The Brunswick top cover is not machine washable and can be spot cleaned only.
