Best Foam Mattresses - Our Top Picks

How We Compared All Canadian Online Mattress Brands

As with all mattress reviews and comparisons on Mattress-Reviews.com, GoodMorning.com Inc. tests major online mattress brands to continually update and improve its own products. Analyzing the builds, brands, and specifications of competitor mattresses ensures GoodMorning.com always offers the best possible value to its customers.

To provide a consistent benchmark for our tests, we commission third-party engineers to test every mattress in the exact same way. You can view the methodology of testing and the APEGA-stamped results document here.

#1 Douglas: Best Overall

Image of the side of the Douglas mattress.

Who It’s Best For

Sleepers who want a high-quality foam mattress at a great price
Sleepers who want a Canadian-made mattress made with sustainable materials
Sleepers looking for a medium-firm feel with consistent support
 Combination sleepers

Key Features

Cooling gel foam
10-inch height
Eco-conscious design
Moisture-wicking machine-washable cover
Additional cooling upgrades available
Superior motion isolation
365-night sleep trial
 15-year warranty

Why It’s Best

A combination of quality construction and materials, performance, affordable prices, industry-leading sleep trial, and lengthy warranty designate Douglas as the Best Overall Foam Mattress.

The Douglas boasts a medium-firm feel that provides optimal comfort and support. This makes it a versatile choice for sleepers looking for a mattress that offers just enough “hug” while giving plenty of support to maintain spinal alignment.

Douglas’ proprietary cooling gel foam is lighter and less carbon-intensive than conventional memory foam. In addition to having a smaller carbon footprint, the cooling gel won’t retain heat and circulates air much more freely than some of Douglas’ top competitors. While the mattress cover’s breathability also helps improve air circulation, its machine-washable capability is another perk Douglas sleepers enjoy.

Douglas mattresses are particularly adept at absorbing movement, making them ideal for those who don’t want to be disturbed by a partner or pet while sleeping. In third-party testing of over 115 popular mattresses, the Douglas Summit earned the top spot as the best mattress for motion isolation, closely followed by the Douglas Alpine in second, and the Douglas Original in fourth. Douglas mattresses are particularly adept at absorbing movement, making them ideal for those who don’t want to be disturbed by a partner or pet while sleeping.

Lastly, Douglas offers a 365-night sleep trial, one of the longest in the industry. Pair that with an incredible 15-year warranty and you have a winning combination of comfort, support, and peace of mind.

#2 Octave: Best Memory Foam

Who It’s Best For

Sleepers who want contouring and a slow sinking mattress
Sleepers who want great temperature regulation
Sleepers looking for pressure-point relief
Combination sleepers

Key Features

Higher-density copper-infused gel foam for pressure point relief
Phase-change material designed to balance body temperature
Machine-washable cooling nanofibre cover
Multi-zone support foam with breathable built-in air channels

Why It’s Best

The Octave Vista is a unique copper-gel memory foam mattress that delivers advanced cooling and pressure-point relief. Octave offers a medium-firm feel, full-body contouring, and balanced support, making it an excellent choice for all sleep styles.

While similar memory foam mattresses trap heat, Octave Vista is designed to keep you comfortable with the latest cooling technology.

  • Octave Vista is cool to the touch, thanks to CryoFusion™ cooling nanofibres in the machine-washable top cover. Octave Mirage and Octave Horizon, the brand’s next-level models, provide even more cooling comfort with a higher amount of nanofibres for each.
  • The mattress’s top layer is copper-infused gel memory foam, paired with PolarMAX® moisture-wicking phase-change material. This high-performance layer pulls heat and sweat away from your body for a cooler, more comfortable sleep. Copper also has anti-microbial properties, which can help keep your mattress clean and fresh.
  • Beneath the transition layer of premium, body-contouring Elastex® foam, Octave’s bottom layer is constructed from high-density motion isolation support foam that contains integrated air channels to let warm air escape and fresh air flow through. Five pressure-relief zones provide support for your entire body.

To top it off, Octave prices begin at $599 CAD, a fraction of the cost of similar store-bought mattresses, including many Tempur-Pedic ($2,499+).

#3 Juno: Best Value Foam

Image of the side of the Juno mattress.

Who It’s Best For

Sleepers looking for a queen-size mattress less than $500
Sleepers who want an all-Canadian value mattress
Sleepers who want a mattress with a lower profile
 Combination sleepers

Key Features

 Cooling gel foam
8-inch height
Breathable-knit cover with Cool+ upgrade
 Above-average motion isolation
 120-night sleep trial
 15-year warranty

Why It’s Best

In the ultra-competitive value market segment, finding a foam mattress that ticks off as many boxes as Juno is surprising. Packed with features like a cooling gel layer and above-average motion isolation, Juno easily sets itself apart from its competitors.

Unlike other value options, Juno mattresses are made in Canada with Canadian-sourced materials. The Juno contains two layers of foam that work together to provide comfort and support. The first layer is 2 inches of full-body cooling gel foam and the second layer is 6 inches of total support foam. Sleepers will notice the cooling gel comfort layer cradles the shoulders and hips while helping maintain spinal alignment throughout the night. Its medium-firm feel also suits most sleep styles and body types.

On top of carrying a very affordable price tag of $499 CAD for a queen, Juno also offers a 15-year warranty, a 120-night sleep trial, free shipping and returns, and arranged mattress pickup.

The bottom line? Juno is undoubtedly our pick for Best Value Foam Mattress.

Silk & Snow

Image of the side of the Silk and Snow mattress.

Who Might Consider Silk & Snow

Sleepers who want a soft mattress
Sleepers who want an antimicrobial fabric cover
Sleepers looking for a plush and contouring top layer

Key Features

Cooling gel foam
10-inch height
Machine-washable cover
100-night sleep trial
 15-year warranty

About Silk & Snow

Silk & Snow is a small bed and bath company. In 2017, they launched their first memory foam mattress in a single-firmness that departed from most bed-in-a-box brands in North America. While market leaders like Douglas and Endy attempt to appeal to the largest demographic of sleepers with medium to medium-firm mattresses, Silk & Snow caters to those who crave something softer.

The Silk & Snow has a three-layer design and stands 10 inches tall. The first layer is high-density gel memory foam, the second layer is transition foam, and the final layer is support foam. Silk & Snow’s signature foam mattress also comes with a machine-washable cover made of polyester and cotton.

Lightweight sleepers or those looking for a sleep surface with plenty of ‘hug’ generally prefer soft mattresses. With that being said, the Silk & Snow may sink too much for many sleepers, especially stomach sleepers. Unless you’re specifically looking for a soft mattress, you’ll want to steer clear of this mattress.

Tuft & Needle

Image of the side of the Tuft & Needle mattress.

Who Might Consider Tuft & Needle

Sleepers who want edge support
Sleepers looking for a mattress under $1,500
Sleepers looking for a mattress with lots of customers reviews

Key Features

Above-average edge support
10-inch height
 Graphite and cooling gel beads
100-night sleep trial
10-year warranty

About Tuft & Needle

Tuft & Needle was founded in 2012 by two software engineers and entered the mattress scene with a straightforward two-layer foam mattress sold on Amazon. Two years later, the bed-in-a-box brand not only launched their own website, but have also expanded into Canada.

The T&N Original is the brand’s latest two-layer foam mattress iteration. The top layer contains graphite and cooling gel beads for better heat dissipation, cushioning, and pressure-point relief. Every Tuft & Needle mattress is also made in the same country where the order was placed.

The T&N Original has covered its bases for a foam mattress: it sleeps cool, offers good edge support, and has a medium-firm feel that caters to various body types and sleep styles. However, in a crowded market segment, Tuft & Needle could do more to differentiate itself from its competitors or at least justify its price.

Most mid-market mattresses offer three to four foam layers of foam, machine-washable covers, and a minimum sleep trial period of 100 nights, so paying $979 CAD for a queen-sized T&N Original may be a shock. The limited features can easily make this mattress feel overpriced for only offering two foam layers.

If you’re keen on getting more value for your money, you’ll thank yourself for considering more feature-rich options. The Douglas ($799 CAD for a queen), for instance, offers three foam layers, a machine-washable cover, a 15-year warranty, and one of the longest sleep trials in the industry.

Endy

Image of the side of the Endy mattress.

Who Might Consider Endy

Sleepers looking for a slightly contouring top layer
Sleepers looking for a mattress under $1,000
Sleepers looking for a mattress with lots of customers reviews

Key Features

Above-average motion isolation
10-inch height
Machine-washable cover
100-night sleep trial
 15-year warranty

About Endy

Endy originally launched in 2015, but gained national attention after appearing on CBC’s Dragon’s Den in 2017. Shortly after Endy’s network television debut, the company was purchased by Sleep Country, the largest mattress retailer in Canada.

Despite many glowing reviews from paid partnerships, genuine customer reviews tell a different story. Customers only rate Endy as “Average” on Trustpilot and the brand is unaccredited by the Better Business Bureau.

The Endy comprises of three foam layers and only comes in a single firmness. The first layer is responsible for comfort and temperature control, while the second and third layers provide the mattress with overall support. However, based on third-party engineer testing, the Endy is firmer than many other foam mattresses we’ve tested and also has below-average edge support.

Endy does have a reasonable price, warranty, and sleep trial. When topped with a machine-washable cover, the Endy shapes up to be a good mid-market mattress. However, the more expensive price and shorter sleep trial compared to top competitors prevented Endy from ranking any higher on our list.

Casper

Who Might Consider Casper

Sleepers who want a zoned transition layer
Sleepers looking for a mattress under $2,000

Key Features

Perforated foam
11-inch height
Recycled plastic cover
100-night sleep trial
10-year warranty

About Casper

Since launching in 2014, Casper has made several adjustments to the look and feel of its flagship mattress, the Casper Original. The latest version of the Casper Original has fewer layers, a softer overall feel, and lost an inch in height. However, the price remains the same despite differences in composition and the lack of new features.

At $1,495 CAD for a queen, customers will be disappointed to learn the Casper Original does not come with cooling gel foam, a machine-washable cover, or a competitive sleep trial and warranty length.

Although Casper is one of North America’s most well-known mattress companies, this recognition came at a steep cost. Known for its splashy advertising campaigns, the brand has been making headlines for overspending and operating at a loss year over the past few years. Casper also has a 3.9/5 star rating on Trustpilot and a 1.09/5 star rating on the Better Business Bureau, with most customer complaints related to poor service.

If you’re new to the world of boxed beds, it might be worth exploring other mattress brands that offer additional features and excellent customer service for a fraction of the price you would pay for the Casper Original.

Nectar

Image of the Nectar mattress from the side against a white background

Who Might Consider Nectar

Sleepers who want a long warranty period
Sleepers who want a medium-soft firmness
Sleepers who don’t mind mattress foams sourced from China and Mexico
Sleepers who don’t mind purchasing from a less reputable brand

Key Features

Cooling gel foam
12-inch height
Shift-resistant lower cover
365-night sleep trial
Lifetime warranty

About Nectar

Nectar offers a competitive price, warranty, and sleep trial, but that’s where the good news ends.

The US-based company does a great job promoting how many mattresses they’ve sold and their favourable customer reviews. However, it is a different story where Nectar doesn’t control the narrative. Reviews on sites like Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and Reddit highlight real customers’ concerns when dealing with Nectar. To top it off, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has charged Nectar’s parent company, Resident Home LLC, multiple times for false advertising claims.

Low scores from third-party testing indicate that the Nectar mattress falls short in edge support and may be far softer than the medium-firm feel Nectar claims in their marketing materials.

Canadian shoppers looking for an affordable foam mattress should consider other options from more reputable Canadian companies. Individuals over 125 lbs or stomach/back sleepers will likely want to choose a more supportive mattress that promotes healthy spinal alignment.

Purple

Who Might Consider Purple

Sleepers who want to sleep on an alternative sleep surface technology
Sleepers looking for a mattress under $4,000
Sleepers who don’t mind purchasing from a less reputable brand
Sleepers who aren’t shopping for twin or Califonia king sizes

Key Features

Polymer top layer
11-inch height
SoftFlex cover
100-night sleep trial
10-year warranty

About Purple

Purple’s fun advertising and proprietary mattress technology have helped it become one of the most recognizable online mattress brands. So why does the Purple Plus rank so low on our list?

It primarily comes down to value. The Purple Plus doesn’t deliver many incremental benefits that mattresses one-third of its price can offer. Retailing at a staggering $3,349 CAD for a queen, the Purple Plus is the least expensive model Purple offers in Canada.

Third-party engineer testing also revealed the Purple Plus is a very soft mattress with very little edge support, which may not appeal to the majority of sleepers who need more support or prefer a medium to medium-firm feel.

While you may still be tempted to try out the Purple GelFlex® Grid, keep in mind Purple does not offer refunds. If you aren’t happy with your mattress, you can only exchange it for other Purple products within the first 100 nights. And remember, the Purple Plus is the cheapest Purple mattress, so you might spend even more money.

By not offering money-back refunds on such an expensive product, Purple quickly lost favour on customer review sites like Trustpilot, where it received a “Poor” rating. If you’re not willing to spend thousands of dollars on a bed-in-a-box mattress, you’ll be excited to learn many competitor mattresses offer similar, if not more, features than the Purple Plus.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right mattress is essential to getting a good night’s sleep but has its own challenges, especially when many mattress companies claim to have a mattress that suits all sleeping positions and body types.

The key is finding a mattress that will provide the right support and cushioning. But it’s important not to forget factors like breathability, motion isolation, edge support, and durability when mattress shopping.

The Best Foam Mattresses on our list have been chosen for their ability to meet these criteria and provide the ultimate sleeping experience.

Now that you have all the necessary information, it’s time to start shopping. We hope that our list has been helpful in your search for the perfect mattress. If you’re ready to take the next step and get the best price on one of our Top 3 Picks, click the links below!
